Hi I'm planning on doing my das next spring and wonder what you folk think about an SV650s as a first das bike? Could I restrict it before I've completed full das so I can use it? (I'm 35)

Is it a bad idea to get your bike before completing or even starting learning? Incentive?

Thanks Dom

welcome to the org.. many moons ago the sv was my first big bike after my 32bhp restriction was up.

You wont go wrong with an sv :)

The SV and Kawasaki's SV equivalent, the ER6, make great bikes for restricted licenses and happen to be strong DAS bikes for nearly all the same reasons.

The six-fiddy twins are great when restricted as it's their down low torque that makes the bike shine, it's also what makes it such a fun bike with your exceptional power being ( very importantly ) legally usable unlike an inline-four which appreciates screaming.

Aftermarket parts are plenty, they're used in the minitwin race class so there's really no unexplored territory regarding performance mods, it's a bike that has been about for what is nearing a decade and a half so any problems you might have you can have confidence somebody else on the internet has previously resolved, and I think they sound bloody brilliant with a slip-on.

Ooo getting excited now, I've had a look around and my budget is sub £2000 possibly more like 1500. Realistic? Would like a fully faired pointy like the the one recently for sale on here

You could get an older generation Curvy with some 18-30k miles for a slight over a grand.

Pointies tend to go for 1500-2000 with varying miles, I'd expect to spend closer to 2k if it has under 10k miles and is in good nick.

Trying to source one from our own boards would be a good idea also, more likely to have maintained it if the owner has bothered to investigate their own bike.

Thanks for all the advice/info, not meaning to cause any offence but I'm not keen on the softer lines of the curvy. I would prefer to buy from someone on here or a forum rather than someone I have no feedback on.

My insurance quotes I've had assuming I passed are ridiculously low, is that normal? I know im heading for midlife but I was surprised.

Is there any problem in getting a plus 20-30k

Well that's all the curvy owners offended, you're going straight to hell for that ;)

Not if its been looked after, with regular servicing, the engine is good for high milages

That's what I thought

One thing I wondered is would my towering 5'7" inside leg of 31-32" and 10 1/2 stone pose any problems? I decided on an SV over a thundercat based partly on its lower weight. Damn I'm sensible

I'm 5'4" with an inside leg of 29" apart from when fully loaded for a fortnights camping it's no bother really.

BTW welcome and learn to love curvys.

I'm not dead against them but would prefer a pointy
