View Full Version : New mobile time...../

it's that time again for me..... in some ways I'm glad about this as it means I now have the chance to get rid of my current and appalling phone (whether that be because I don't use it to the best of it's abilities or not, it's still a crap phone), but in many ways it's horrible as I now have to go about trying to negotiate with O2 for a new phone and contract....
I have been with o2 for many years (8 years I think now (but that is actually much longer as I was always with them as a PAYG customer)) and as such think that should give me a bit of sway when it comes to getting a decent deal (but this doesn't seem to be the case :( ) I have poor signal where I live, but it's just a small 'dead' spot as whenever I go just about anywhere else I have very good signal and nobody has any signal here, whatever their network!
I'm wanting an iphone, am not bothered/don't want the newest one, I'm more than happy with a 5s (please don't go suggesting other phones, I know want and as such it is what i'll get). the thing I'm really after is some advice as to the contract 'negotiations' that I'm going to have, as I have already have had one and it didn't go particularly well. what sort of things do I need to be saying to try and get what I would consider to be a decent deal please? I don't really want to be paying more than £30 a month and don't want to be paying anything up front for the phone (the reason I originally went onto contract was so that I could get a new phone for free!)
I'm probably asking too much, but I thought I'd try you lot as I know you're a savvy bunch who always come up with something good.

Tell them you're leaving, once you get put through to customer retention they'll have the best prices that they are allowed to offer.

You need to find the deal you want or close to it on another network, then tell 02 to match it or you'll leave. But why stay with 02 at all? You like the cinema - switch to ee for the renamed Orange Wednesday. Or what do Vodafone offer? I've never known you actually use 02's priority gig booking service, have you ever used it?

Are you factoring in the cost of insurance for your handset? It isn't covered on your home contents policy, so look around for a stand alone policy, this will be cheaper than buying through your mobile supplier.
On a brand new Samsung S5 I paid £60 for a year which included loss, theft and breakage. That also covered water damage but the S5 is waterproof and it's in a drop proof case which works brilliantly.
Of course the iPhone isn't waterproof and they are notoriously easy to smash if you drop them. You'll also have an excess to pay, but a new handset cash price is hundreds of pounds if you lose or break your phone or forget where you put it so worth considering insurance.

I always ring that line anyway, so that you get through quicker and even when I do end up speaking to someone they really don't have very much they can offer me it seems! :(

I do quite enjoy the cinema, but I have no one to go with these days, so I would never use that :( as for the priority gig thing, I've never really explored it and am not overly bothered about going to music gigs anyway...

I shall consider it, but I think it is covered under the home insurance, shall check though. and I always buy a case for my phone and will buy a decent one for the new one, so have never really considered myself to need the insurance and have just always thought it an unnecessary add on to the costs etc.

Home insurance doesn't normally cover mobile phones unless it was stolen as part of a burglary and I know from checking your phone isn't covered on yours as we've asked before. Same as your pushbike.
Maybe you just need to ask people to go to the cinema!

I used to insure my phones but now I no longer bother (as I have spares). After 12 months your phone has been replaced by 3 different models, so replacing the phone is no more than £50. Saving £5 a month more easily covers the replacement phone instead of getting a repaired or refurbished phone.

I would only insure for the first year. A sim free replacement 5s is going to set you back £500+ pounds though.
The next challenge will be transferring all existing info from the current phone over to the new phone. Since he has a habit of hurling his phone at the floor in a temper I can see this new one not lasting long - and there was nothing wrong with old Samsung, it was a great phone, it just had a few issues with user error (caused by a refusal to read the instructions)! :D

the iphone won't get thrown around at all because one it will work properly as a phone should do, not in a completely stupid way as samsungs work! and 2 if they're as complicated to use and not obvious as with this Samsung it should come with a manual, not a piece of paper directing you to a crappy website.
Littlepeahead

Millions of people seem to be able to get Samsungs to work fine, and I doubt the iPhone will come with a huge printed paper manual but I'm happy for someone on here to tell me I'm wrong. Very few companies would cut down millions of trees and waste the ink when they can direct you to a website or give you a PDF to download which you had for the Samsung.

yes, but I don't need one as I already know how to use one.
anyway, I didn't want this to be a battle of opinions of iphone versus, it's fair enough some people don't like them, but I am in the camp of liking them. so I have now tried a Samsung and I have not enjoyed the experience one bit. so can we please get back to my original question? thank you.

The point is you won't get instructions on paper you have to look them up online regardless of phone.
Tesco and Vodafone seem to offer the best deal. If you've already been to the O2 retention department then clearly they don't want your custom so simply go elsewhere, there's no advantage to being loyal to one company.
£30 per month should get you a decent deal with around 1gb of data.

Why bother with ammo? Just go elsewhere. Seems like you are putting far too much effort into getting them to keep you as a customer. Is there any particular reason you need to stay with O2?
After all, you and I have had several conversations in the past year about you switching to Vodafone and haggling with them to give you one of these gadgets so you can get signal at home, not something 02 offer. Did you remember to call Vodafone and ask them about it?
http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/mShop/mobile-phone/accessories/sku75375-white
O2 have an app for when you don't have signal, so you can use wifi but it comes off your allowance for calls and texts. It's called TU go. Apparently you can use it on anyone's phone or tablet.
3 have a similar app. But only on your own phone.
Not sure on vodaphone or ee though on that front.
In regards to negotiating, save yourself the time. The cost of phones is so high now, they just don't have the wiggle room. UNLESS you just want a cheaper tariff.
If you can afford to fork out for the phone in one go, haggle the price of you contract down with them or switch to sim only.
I have been on contracts for so many years for the same reason as you, don't pay for the phone. But now, the phones are so expensive you can't get a reasonable tariff.
I just bought an iPhone 6, I'm half way through my contract which is currently £46 a month and was for a 5s. The same tariff for the 6 is now £56!
I can get essentially the same tariff on sim only for £20, that's a £36/m saving. Plus I bought AppleCare which is only £75 and £75 excess. So I can add the £12 a month insurance to the savings.
That's £576 over a year. Plus by selling my old phones I can upgrade to the newest one each year.

Not sure how good the vodaphone one is, but I have a signal booster from 3, it connects to wifi to generate a 3G signal.
It does this well, but the 3G speed is shocking.
You are better off using wifi for data (which 3 do say) and the booster for texts and calls.
But then if you have what's is essentially a VOIP app that doesn't matter
Littlepeahead
23-11-14, 11:39 AM
Chris knows about TU but that's only for texts, not calls.
Thing is we've had all these discussions several weeks ago when we knew his phone was in the last weeks of his contract! And I've sent him all this info previously which is why I'm sounding a bit frustrated that he's asking all of you again!

Its probably because we're paying for the 4G licenses?
Oh and if you do go for the 5s and want an incredible case, I have a LifeProof Nuud case for the 5s which works with Touch ID.
The TU go app should be calls, texts and voicemail as per the O2 website, if not it's false advertising!!
Not so much mavic, most companies ask you to pay more for 4g anyway, other than 3. That should in theory recoup some of the loss. It's mainly the phones, if you look back several years when retention teams could give you good deals, it was because the most expensive phones were only a couple of hundred at most. Now the cheap phones are a couple of hundred.
Also I have noticed that you can't choose how much to pay for your phone.
Previously it was the tariff was X and you paid Y+/- for the phone.
Now it's X for the phone and generally Y+ for the tariff.
It's because they understand the stupidity of us. We would rather spend a bit less at the start because we can see the expense than pay less over the long term.

Chris said he wanted a 'free' phone. That's why he was getting a contract. But you have to look at it that it isn't a free phone, the company gives you an interest free loan for the handset then you pay a monthly tariff for calls, minutes and data. Some now list it that way.
If you want an Apple product be prepared to pay for it.
If you lose or break it, then the replacement cost will be high, £500 perhaps.
A phone now costs more and probably does more than a laptop, yet people leave them teetering on the side of the bath, chuck them about like a toy, and generally treat them like they are disposable hence the high insurance cost.
Chris had TU on his laptop but only used it for texts, so if it was set up for calls he certainly wasn't using it as I always had to call his landline!
His home is definitely in a dead spot but he should see if Vodafone would offer him that device as a new customer in order to get his business.
Ah right, I get you. Didn't realise it was on his laptop.
The app is on the phone, so as long as it is connected to wifi it does the lot.

I have the TU go app on my phone, it does have good points in that you can make calls and send texts from it via the wifi, which is fine, but what does irritate me about it is that, with text messages, ones you send from the app don't update onto your phone. so if you then go somewhere and start using the phone as normal, you can't look back at the conversation without going into the app.
Ah right, I get you. Didn't realise it was on his laptop.

I have the same with my 3 app, quite annoying.
I think my house was built as a SCIF as there is little mobile signal and wifi barely gets out of the room the router is in.
Between the signal booster and a nifty wifi power line adapter I have managed to get signal in my room.
Depends on your own situation what is the best way.
But to answer your original question, there is essentially nothing you can do to negotiate with a network on price if you want a phone as well at renewal.
Maybe as LPH says you could haggle a deal on the vodaphone signal booster as part of a package.

Well yeah, if you have the cash for the phone that is the best way.

Get on O2 refresh
Splits the Phone payment and Tariff payments
You pay off the phone (£20 a month)
You pay off the tariff (£18 a month for unlimited calls and texts, 1gb interwebs)
When you see a new phone you pay off the phone part after selling current phone and you get a brand spanker through O2, you keep you tarriff going. Suddenly 24 month contracts no longer seem daunting.
*Edit the prices above are for a galaxy s5 so maybe less for the iphone
