Curvey coolant warning light

Hello l'm building a cafe racer from a 2001 SV650S could someone tell me if the small led light should come on when the ignition is switched on prior to start up?

It definitely should and does on the 2009 model.

Either all the ones I've seen are broken or it only comes on above a certain temp at the thermostat

Thanks for that Jambo it does seem to be the case that only comes on when it overheats which is a strange as you would not know if the light was out unless you test it by grounding out the green and black wire which connects onto the temperature switch which screws into the thermostat housing, I managed to look at a few pictures of the dashboard of bikes that are on sale on eBay that have the idiot lights on and the engine is not running and the liitle led is not lit
