View Full Version : Cartridge forks for minitwins

Hi Guys,
I'm creating myself a minitwin and have bought some cartridge forks from Andreani Group.
They are very good and have been set up for racing by the previous owner. The only problem is the forks caps aren't standard. Would these be valid in minitwins or can the caps be changed to standard?
BTW this is my first post. I live a couple of miles from Brands Hatch so hope to be doing a track days in 2015 and hopefully racing in 2016.
My build so far is
2002 sv650s
zx6r rear shock
Cartridge front forks
New wheel and steering bearings
15 / 46 renthal sprockets and renthal rr4 race chain
Woodruff key (bought not installed yet)
Front and rear inlet cams (bought but not installed)
Renthal grips
Racing clips ons
Racing rearsets
Corsa rosso tyres
Two finger levers
Delkevic slip on
SBS front and rear sintered pads
Front and rear wesmoto front and rear brake lines
Anything else I could add other than fairing and lightweight subframes - they will be next year.
Thanks
Barry
Hi mate,
I've recently built a minitwin, there's a build thread on here. I'm also only about 20mins from brands
I'm pretty sure the cartridges aren't minitwin legal and neither will be the ignition woodruff key.
If you're only going to be doing track days this year I'd maybe just stick with the cartridge kit and change/sell it if and when you start racing.

The last time I read the regs the fork tops had to be standard.
I was sure I'd responded to this...
For Minitwins the rules on engine mods are surprisingly restrictive.
Woodruff key (bought not installed yet) - Counts as altering the ignition advance and is so not allowed I believe.
Front and rear inlet cams (bought but not installed) - Cams can be from a pointy, but must be used as intended, as in inlet cams in inlet side, exhaust side. Bemsee Regs can be found here:
https://www.bemsee.net/info-centre/downloads/2014-class-regulations
Nothing to stop you doing this on a track bike but the improvements would be marginal and if you were picked up on this in racing the bike would be classed as not meeting requirements.

Not surprising, it's supposed to be a budget class, not make you have a 10 grand engine if you want to compete!
You can't modify the forks for extra external adjustment.
I did a couple of sets with modified standard caps which gave you comp and reb hidding under (dummy) preload adjusters.
They worked, would have worked a lot better with a bit more development. Seems emulators are good enough for most.

It's true, and thankfully 72HP isn't a stratospheric number to get to, though I suspect the 106,000 mile red bike is going to fall a smidge short...
However, I've a pretty good idea what front riders do to their motors, and while it's impossible to prove, it's not exactly in the spirit of things. Hey ho, those of us without any money will be sodding about at the back of the grid, though somehow I doubt it'll be power holding me back.

Thank you, I thought I was loosing my marbles.

just out of curiosity, as I'm not racing, how do they check? I'm sure they won't tear open your engine :smt003 and measure your cams with a micrometer, will they?

Has been known for that to happen. Depending on club it can be anything from taking off covers to dyno runs

Well if you're at the front you'll have started with a fresh motor, which is going to be rebuilt a couple of times a season to keep it exactly in spec. This is not illegal, but is an expense most people won't be able to go to. Blueprinting is not allowed under the rules but is impossible to check as all it means is that you happened to get a good one...

Cartridges are, but for BEMSEE at least, altering the preload caps to allow external damping adjustment seems not to be:
"2 Suspension
2.1 Forks must remain as originally produced by the manufacturer for the homologated machine
with the exception of the following:
• 2.1.1 Original internal parts of the fork may be modified or replaced. After market damper kits
or valves may by installed. Fork springs may be replaced.
• 2.1.2 Fork caps may not be modified or replaced beyond the homologated standard to allow
external adjustments."

Andy's right, Dyno runs are not uncommon to prove that you're not making more than 72 HP, and popping the cam cover off to show that you have non-standard cams is not hard work as all the markings are different as you can see on the BARF thread :)

you could however use it as a supertwin as the rules are a lot more relaxed in what can be done to the bike. It will cost a shed load to get it up to top spec mind.

I've found that not to be the case.
My lad has run at the front at BEMSEE all year with out a refresh and on a 15k plus engine. The most I've done is change the oil and check the shims a couple of times this year. Our bike has been checked several times on the DYNO and been spot on each time.
