I'd go merc on this particular occasion, but that's not really because I know a great deal about either car it's more because I prefer the quality feeling of mercs that I have been in recent years that are of that size.

wouldn't bother with the 1.8, you'll be disappointed.

In anything bigger than the 1 series the 1.8 is underpowered.

I was looking at 330d's and C250s when I was looking for my new car. Bought a Jaguar XF in the end with a 3ltr V6, glad I did now.

What do you need it for is a big part. If you need to get four adults in it a lot get the 5 door, if not, the 2 door etc

I had a 118 M Sport (143 bee aitch peas) for 3 years as a company car. It wasn't blisteringly fast, but it was good fun and nice to drive. Could get the tail out if you are that way inclined. I would have another in a heartbeat. "Interesting" in anything more than 1mm on snow! :)

218, 220, 223 whatever, they are all 2 litre, not a 1.8, just BMW speak for different power output.
Test drive them. I've driven neither, but can imagine the BMW is more of a drivers car.

It depends which one you get, I've heard the 116 is terrible.

At the end of the day the car has got to be the right one for the job at hand, if all OP needs is a 2 door coupe, get the 118

Ditto. 3.0litre V6 Diesel. Fantastic car.

Bought mine used with <16k miles from the Jag dealer. They do PCP on their used cars. No brainer for me :)

Back to OP:
I suspect the BMW is better fuel-wise but I'd still go for the Merc.
