Spotted this in a camera shop up the road from the hotel. Seems to have a smudge on the lens (going to ask for it to be cleaned) but its a Tamron 18-200mm XR AF DI ii for €69

Worthwhile for a all day lens?

Well I bought it. Didn't notice the af-d bit at the bottom. Won't know if its compatible with my D3200 until I get home tomorrow.

The DiII range is for crop sensor bodies and according to the Tamron website there are no limitations when bolting one of these to a D3200 as long as you have the right mount (ie, you don't buy the version for Canon, which I doubt you'd do).
This is the more simple version of the lens that does not come with VR, the Tamron name for image stabilisation. It will give a very nice range for everyday use so enjoy.

Not sure if something is wrong with the lens. It won't autofocus on my D3200. Tried it in the shop on a D7100 and it was fine. Possible issue with the onboard motor?

Yeah, I've read that a lot of the Nikon's, including the D3200 I think won't work with older motor driven focussing lenses, I am guessing that's why you have issues. The same issues exist for the Tokina macro I suggested on here the other day.

Discussion points like this one hit the nail on the head, although this was about the D5200: "I would recommend you going with the D7000 or the new D7100. All of the older generation Nikon lenses will work with these two bodies...but not with the D5200 because it does not have the internal autofocus motor, so it will not autofocus with original-style screw-drive AF lenses." A number of the bigger Nikon bodies have an AF motor in the body which drives the older AF lenses. The smaller bodies do not and need the motor to be inside the lens. The Nikon lenses have AF-S or one of the other standards to show this.

It may not be relevant but check the lens and whether it has an internal motor

Just seen the screw on the lens mount. No good for D3200. May have to flog it.

That's a shame - the one I looked at on the Tamron site must have been the newer version with the built-in motor.
