After the recent trip to Dusseldorf, my wife has said I need a more suitable travel camera. The Fuji HS10 and my D3200 are too bulky and heavy to lug around so I have been given the nod to look into a compact. I would ideally like good low light ability but not vital,a half decent zoom and a tiltable screen would be great. I know sensor size will have a big impact on IQ as well. Not sure of budget yet but putting feelers out.

Something like this:

They also do the S9700 with 30x zoom

I have that camera. Its excellent. (S9600)

Not as good as a DSLR clearly but takes some nice pics has some built in effects and settings different times and a very useful zoom.

My folks have the S9700 with the GPS I didn't think it was as good but the zoom is longer.

I have a Canon G15 which I always keep in my handbag. I find it easy to use and light enough to take everywhere.

The S9600 and 9700 are very similar apart from the zoom 22 vs 30x, GPS, shutter and aperture priority and the pixels of the screen. But the 9600 is a lot cheaper.

I always recommend the Panasonic Lumix TZ series. I've got an old one, the TZ60 is the current king of the hill. It's not that cheap, but it's capabilities are beyond what many DSLR users will manage.

I'll be getting one in the new year.

Agree with the above. The TZ Panasonics are good cameras. I have an old TZ10 though it does have its limitations in low light conditions but if you are prepared to play around with the settings, the results can be good.
TZ55 can be got for around 130 pounds but it doesn't have great reviews.
The older TZ35 is a better camera......Argos were selling it off for £99 last week.(buy someting for a couple of quid to take the total over £100 and you get a 10 quid voucher as well)

When I'm not lugging a Nikon around my travel camera is the Panasonic LX5 .

Good:

decent zoom range
shoots 16:10, 3:2, and 1:1 format
full manual control if you want it
external flash connector

Bad:

video files are in avc-hd; it's a pain to convert
not quite small enough to slip into my pocket
minimum aperture is only f/8
not enough working distance in macro mode

I'd expect the current LX7 to be much the same.

I have picked up the Lumix TZ35. It had a good mix of zoom, control settings and weight.

Initial thoughts?
Did you find anywhere better than Argos for the deal?

I feel I may have to treat myself.

Very lightweight, well built. The boot up is about two seconds. This includes the lens extending. Not played with it much (its on charge at the mo) but as the others have said, it is a lot of camera for the price! The next one up is £129.99 at John Lewis, it has a flip over screen and wifi. I didn't feel the need for the extras.

I have one of these:

To be fair I know very little about cameras but people who do seem to know a bit have commented positively about the shots it takes. I love it, very small and light while having some pretty decent features (probably...)

Picked up one from Argos. Pictures are good. Excellent at enabling you to take "wrong" pictures such as massively back-lit straight into the sun. Video capture is surprisingly good too.

Couple of niggles....
- Why does it not use a standard USB lead!!!
- A bit over keen at zipping the lens in and out when reviewing pictures etc
- doors feel like they are going to get snapped off pretty soon

Ended up getting it for £85 from Argos (£10 voucher for sending £100 + £5 voucher for bad service) so can put up with the niggles for something that appears to be a pretty decent pocket camera.

Yeah I thought this as well. Another stupid lead in my massive draw full of leads. The battery door is a bit weird as well, it feels like the retainer should spring back or something when closed instead of having to slide it back.

Avoid Fuji.

So you would turn one of these down then?
