...a decent laptop and printer set up.
Looking to replace an antique desktop set up with a someting a tad more modern, desktop is still running, (just), Windows XP :|. Yes I know, but as far as pooters go, my motto is, if it ain't broke.....Trouble is it's soooo sloooow now :-S Printer I bought at the same time as the desktop has finally shot it's last load of ink too.

As stated need a desktop replacement with the capability of a bit more portability, not going to be taking it out of the house so doesn't need great battery life, and I want it to be able to cope with light office duties, spreadsheets, invoices and the likes. Needs a decent sized screen for a myopic ol' git too. Don't start talking ******** about Ubunkum and other Linoleum please, I'll stick with Windoze, for better or worse.

Also need a printer for similar office duties, printing about 50 or so sheets/month recently.

Office software? Not to sure on that either..don't need all the bells and whistles of Microsoft 365 and not too impressed with subscriptions either. Will 'free' software be compatable with with old excel spreadsheets, ie..will I be able to just transfer 'em from old pooter to new laptop without formatting issues?

Price range for all up to 1K.

All and any advice welcomed.

I always bought Epson printers but no more. I bought one this year and it is refusing to accept compatible cartridges. It's insisting on genuine Epson cartridges, which cost an arm and a leg.

Libre Office is an open source free download that emulates Microsoft Office. I use it on my laptop. It reads my Microsoft Office 2003 documents without any intervention from me.

Open office is a free alternative to ms office and looks similar. Will read old and new formats so you are covered there.

Never used a laser printer at home but they should be quicker and better quality than a inkjet, can't believe how cheap they are these days.

Loads of laptops on that site but that looks a good price for an I7, I'd want at least an I5, if it's going to be plugged in most of the time then a smaller laptop with longer battery life probably isn't a priority.

Windows 8 isn't the best OS so you might want to wait till 10 comes out later this year. Or you can upgrade later.

I have the Dell 1765 MPF printer. Paid £162 for it delivered, with 3 year warranty. Can't fault it.

That laser printer has a 600 x 600 resolution. Fine for text but crap for images. Set of Dell toners: £68 - remanufactured: £49.
