I sell petrol and this is something we see nearly every day, although most only pull up on the wrong side twice before either figuring it out or getting mad and driving off.

I have a big car, I pull up at whichever pump is free and pull the hose around the car as the hoses are always long enough. It really annoys me people waiting for a pull to become free on the 'right' side but this one is a special case.

Just while we're on the subject, a top tip which not too many are aware of it seems is that most cars (not all though, I've seen counter examples) have a small arrow on the fuel gauge to tell you which side the filler is on:

very helpful when in hire cars and such.

Also....on *most* older cars the pic of the pump on the dials is on the side with the filler cap ;)

Not always long enough, depends on the car. Have never been able to fill up from the "wrong" side on my Shogun, same as my van in fact even my old fiesta was tricky to fill up from the wrong side due to the position of the filler cap
Not sure about the picture of the pump on the dials being the same side as the petrol filler either, wasn't on my fiesta (1989), transit (2000) or my MG (2004)

A very helpful Vauxhall salesman put me on to this tip back in the mid-nineties. Useful to know. Both my 06 Mundaneo and 11 Focus have them too. I can see how some fillers may be too far from the rear corner to get the hose over from the other side but my Focus is the Estate model and thankfully I don't have that problem.

I'm going to check my SV for that now
Many moons ago I hired a Vauxhall Chevette for a long trip. I pulled in to a petrol station to fill up but then could not find the filler cap. Drivers side? Nope! Passenger side? Nope! Rear? Nope! It took me another 10 minutes before I found it hidden behind some black trim behind the drivers side rear window.
