View Full Version : Getting the foot peg protectors and handlebar looking like new - Is this possible?
I am the second owner of my bike, and the foot peg protectors as below seem like they got scuffed by the previous owners boots. My riding boots have a velcro protector over the zip...so luckily it wont get worse...but its a bit of an eye sore. Is there a quick / easy / pocket friendly fix for this (besides getting the parts replaced)?

Also, the last pic is the handle bars. Again previous owner must have had one helluva keychain cos of those scratches. Also noticed the plastic disk below the handlebars locknut is cracked quite a bit. I assume the bike sat outside in the sun and he didnt have a garage, but as above...any quick / easy / pocket friendly ways to get this fixed?

Your boot leather is abrasive enough to eventually wear the clear paint off the footrest guards and scuff them up. Removing all the original paint, polishing them up and re-painting will look really good, but not for long, as any paint you use isn't going to be as durable as the original. Leaving them unpainted and polishing and waxing them now and then is probably the best you can do. I just let mine look ratty.
No easy fix for the top triple clamp either. Remove, strip and repaint. A Sharpie will make it less obvious.
Suzuki do a carbon sticker for the top yoke. They might describe it as a protector although we all know people only fit them when there are already scratches

Excellent, let me ask Mr Google where I can find such a thing :D

That might help.
I notice some other brands do them cheaper.

Polish the heel plates & paint the top yoke
Or get the both powder coated, and then protect with helicopter tape
Or any combination of the above

I powder coated my foot pegs, but they still got manky. Even if you get clear protective tape, that ends up getting ragged over time.
I'm sure top yokes are made to scratch at the slightest whiff of a keyring, regardless of it's constituent material.

The foot rests are anodized so eventually wears off. Powercoat lasts slightly better

I filed off the casting marks and polished the bits up until they shone. After four years they are still shiny, but do need a rub on the polishing mop again.

Mine looked a bit ratty, but we're improved by applying solvol auto sol and polishing off, I did it three or four times each side didn't take long. The stick on carbon look protectors are probably the easiest way to go for the top yokes,
I've done my filler cap too, looks better than standard in my opinion.

Thanks for all the replies!
About the SolVol Autosol, did it make a significant improvement or did it just make the heel plates look less obviously scuffed?

If you strip the paint off & polish them with Solvol, you'll find that the alloy buffs up really well. Any deep scuffs use some fine wet & dry to remove the scuffs.
Just remember to protect it with some sort of wax or keep polishing them, as any road salt will quickly kill them

Thanks. Sorry for the noob question but what is "wet & dry"? Also...whats the best way to remove the paint?

Paint stripper usually works :p, but not Nitromors.

Buy some carbon fibre look vinyl wrap from Ebay and wrap the heel plates.
They will then match your top yoke !!! Bonus.

Do mine every year, lasts easily a year plus, and when selling the bike remove and the plates still look as new !
