View Full Version : Missing brake seal?

Just completed the holy trinity of new tyres, new chain & sprocket and caliper strip/new seals/rebuild. Gonna feel like a new bike tomorrow!

Anyway, stripping the brake callipers down I expected the dust seals to be a bit shagged. Indeed, the first one I removed was not so much circular as mangled oblong. I was however a tad surprised to find that the first dust seal I removed was also the only dust seal I had.

That's right. The other 3 were nowhere to be seen. My question is... had the 3 missing seals had enough of their neglect, entered a hari kiri pact and leapt from the bike to end it all? Or alternatively, has some f-wit serviced the calipers and forgotten to put the seals back in? Option a) sounds a bit unlikely given they'd all have to remove themselves from the grooves and either sneak past the pistons or break and fall off. Option b) relies on the last caliper service being arsed up by a main dealer about 9 months/8000 miles ago. Any thoughts?

If nothing else, this all confirms Bibio's advice that a rudimentary clean of a caliper is not enough...

i would suspect that they have bit the dust (see what i did there).

just make sure that the pistons are not pitted with rust, if they are then its new pistons time.

9 months and 8K and they were in a state... ermm i think your dealer has ripped you off and not stripped the callipers and instead just sprayed them with brake cleaner.
