hi all basically ill be riding my 04 pointy into first no problem into second no problem and when it comes to third the shifter comes up full travel and doesn't engage the gear and I go to shift 3 to 4 times at different revs and it finally shifts it has only occurred after the last few days. any ideas and also it goes into other gears fine after this.

sounds like a slightly sticky gear shift shaft, its a common problem and all you need to do it take the circlip off the gear lever clean the shaft and inside the hole of the lever and add a good dollop of grease to the shaft and put the gear lever back on remembering to put the circlip back on.

another problem is not letting your foot drop far enough between shifts.

I have an 06 pointy that drops out of gear into neutral when shifting from 2 to 3 very occasionally. It's done it when shifting from 5 to 6 once which wasn't nice. Would this be the same sort of issue?

It's also cut out on me in first, usually at busy traffic lights.

I'm wondering If I'm not using the clutch properly. Or is it mechanical?

Be interested in what you think.

Thanks

Could be the same issue - definitely worth checking. It's worth taking half an hour to clean and grease all your lever pivots anyway. If that hasn't been done for a while it'll feel like a new bike. :)

Other potential free fixes for gear selection problems are correct chain slack and clutch adjustment.

Thanks, wee job for this afternoon. Got a feeling my chain might need replacing.

I occasionally get a false neutral between 4th and 5th if I have a lot of revs on and try to shift too quickly. Happened to me last night as I was overtaking a car. Not nice.

Another possible issue is if the gear shift selector pedal/lever been taken off at sometime and hasnt been put back on at the right 'notch'. I stupidly had multiple issues like bibio explained where my toe wasnt moving enough to shift. I was adjust the clutch cable/ checking the chain slack / cleaning and greasing everything in sight. I googled a few sv pics and compared it to mine and realised that the pedal had been fitted back on by myself in the wrong position.

Once it was put back on at the correct position i adjusted the everything again. This made sure that evey tap made now fully moved the gearbox.

btw Hi everyone!
