SV 99 1st Gen - No Spark on Rear Cylinder

Hi guys,

I ran the Motorcycle Today and it did fine. I wanted to drive down to the petrol station to get some fuel, on my way around 500m I lost half of the power and the bike sounded strange. I realised that I lost my cylinder.

I went back home and checked both spark plugs. They were a bit dark/oily (they're new).

I tried to start the bike again and it started only on the front cylinder. The rear was cold where the front was warm after about 20seconds.

I tested the rear plug for spark but no luck. I tried brand new plug for spark but no spark either with the new one...

Where should I look now? Coil?

Unscrew the rear HT lead on both ends (they do come out) might be a corroded nightmare inside lead.

And the HT lead itself might be bad.

How can I check the HT Lead itself?

I know I have some rust and corrosion on the coil connections so will be clearing that out Today... But unsure on what to do with the HT Lead. Should I use some chemical or liquid to get the lead cleaned? Like WD-40 or similar?

With an ohmmeter is the easiest way. I can't find the specified resistance in my manual, but if you show an open circuit, you know it's bad. You have to take it off, (it screws out of the coil) and I'd advise wiggling it around while you have the meter on it. If it happens to be intact and creating less than around 25K ohms, it might open up as you wiggle it. The spark plug caps have internal resistance too, so you should screw them off before testing.

Nipping off the ends that have been screwed onto the coils and plug caps with side cutters (we call them dykes) about 1/4-3/8" will get rid of any crud, and is a good idea anyway before re-installing.

Check for a spark or the ow-ye-bastid test at the prong on the coil.
