are those socket sets actually any good? cos they are tempting!
For £17 there's only one way to find out...

Chris what are you going to use a socket set for?
They are single hex Chris.
It's worth a punt.
£17 wouldn't by a snap-on individual socket.
Chris what are you going to use a socket set for?

thank you martin!!
I know I may not have a bike currently, but I do hope that shall change in the coming future!
Oh what happened to the curvy.
Don't go to the pointy darkside.
Ps
I brought an ALDI torque wrench to do wheels only. Still going strong and pases the dealer speck test fine every 6 months

I had to sell it (licence problems that I'd rather not talk about.....), shall be unlikely to get another sv now, hopefully I shall be able to afford an SS600....
if I pass an aldi and get a chance I think I may purchase a set if they're still about...

Don't rush, I don't think they're on the shelf til March 2nd. Well, that's the case at my local branch.
Oh trip to so ho to see on the cards in the summer maybe ;)

I should bloody hope so! but I really don't know that it will involve a motorbike :(

Yeh, i have a pair. The stitching near the right index knuckle came off but otherwise they are very good value.
However, the gloves for the past 2-3 years have been great. Fully waterproof and not bad in cold weather (although I do also have hot grips, but on the bike with no hot grips they are actually pretty decent for the price, but not designed for VERY cold weather)
Will definitely be picking up another pair or two.

That's an impressive spec for any textiles, never mind budget Aldi stuff!
Don't tell me that the boots are waterproof for 30 notes...

I'd be interested to know whether or not they are. I wonder if they are made to a similar level of spec to the textiles?

For £30 they might be worth a punt, or just buy some Sealskinz socks which WILL keep your feet dry whatever boots you wear. Can be bought for less than £30

I was looking at some Sealskinz to go in my comfy but not waterproof, "waterproof" Blacks boots, but the soles are coming adrift so I shall just buy some more boots. As you say Mav, at 30 quid they have to be worth a try.
I put kevlar boot lines in my boots. Army ones. That do work
I had those boots. Only changed them as they were quite high as they are more touring based. Comfy, warm and I don't recall getting wet feet!

So you've got bullet proof boots, should come in handy when you shoot yourself in the foot :D

He is
Here's the thing; My mate's missus is decked out from head to toe in Lidl/Aldi gear, and she hits the dirt on an almost weekly basis, albeit sub-30mph. Nothing so far has caved in.
My posh mate, on the other hand, has a Diavel and head-to-toe Dainese, and he's having legal battles about the quality of his clobber - he's not even bit the dirt but he's getting split seams. A thousand pounds a suit versus £60, you decide.
Me, I've always been somewhere in the middle, Frank Thomas served me well, Had some big shunts back in the day, and the clobber always did enough. (Whatever happened to Ashman boots? They're the reason I still have two feet).

Well Aldi & Lidl as you know are German companies, I presume the stuff has to go through the TuV process, which must mean its as good as the BS standard.
I had a Aldi or Lidl jacket, it was perfectly good for my needs, well made with all the features of a more expensive jacket. Ok, it wasn't Gortex, but it didn't cost hundreds of £'s

You're assuming they sell the same stuff in Germany...
Let's be honest, it ain't the prettiest bike gear on sale, but it is bloody cheap, and it's far better than the kit I started out with. I started out with a donkey jacket, some gardening gloves and a Paddy Hopkirk 'Agordo' lid, whose visor would suffer a terminal scratch as you took it out of the box...
But we llive in a land where the label means all, and many people can't see past that. I spend a lot of time on a Ducati forum. They're a different breed, you won't meet many of them in a Lidl car park:smt009

They do sell the same stuff, but not always at the same time as the UK offers.
I makes perfect sense, by economies of scale, as they are buying for all their stores in each country, which means they can drive a good deal with their suppliers.
I have German relatives, so I've seen the same stuff on offer

Yes, but you'll see a wide range of folk in my Lidl.
There's lot of good stuff in Lidl, and its well priced, more fool them for throwing their money away on the same kind of food. Just watch 'Eat well for less' each week.
Brand snobbery is for the rich IMHO

Oh I'm old enough lol
I thought they were dead dangerous. Soft as butter.
They did a motorcycle style pair too.
ASHMAN. Weren't they FT?
Spookly enough I still have my Ashman boots somewhere.
And my old woolf leather jacket and jeans. My son uses the jacket to poses in.

Dunno if this specific one has been on sale before or not but has anyone tried their helmet Bluetooth kit? £27 doesn't sound outrageous. No Bluetooth to pillion (wired instead) but I'd be interested to know if the speakers etc are any use for music on the go via iPod or similar. The mic looks quite big to fit in-helmet?
I currently use cheapy eBay/amazon speakers. No Bluetooth and they break in zero time but as long as you consider them disposable (for the £5 they cost) then they do a semi adequate job. Something with a bit more quality might be nice though...

Brand snobbery is for the rich IMHO Or for those who have to travel so far to Aldi or Lidl, that any saving is wiped out by the costs of getting it :( Tesco is cheapest for me by virtue of being closest.
I would go for Aldi/Lidl bike kit, I've had the compression underwear for years and done thousands of miles in it, its great.
I had the textile pants that were warm and pretty water-proof. My son had an off in some of the textile pants and they stood up well to a long-ish slide.
The helmets are very heavy and bulky, there are better budget helmets to be had.

You only have to ask & I'll get you what you want.
I just hope they have your size ;)
This is obviously open to opinion.
But I feel I have a issue with the a £40 flip front lid.
It would put me off going quickly.

27-02-15, 02:44 PM
It'll have gone through TuV & CE testing, so it'll be fine.
But as LP says its heavy, so that's going to be a factor in any spill
Like any cheap helmet, it isn't going to be as well made as an expensive one.
If I was still doing the CBT, I'd have one, as all our riding was at slower speeds & having a flip front would have been very helpful when it comes to shouting at the students :) ;)
Liam who did my observations (Rospa) has one and yes it's good for talking.
So I have bough a flip front.
But if I was instructing (oh think of the children!!) Then maybe a Lidl be ok up to 50 mph.

I have one I used for taking friends on a 'quick spin round the block'. Actually wore it once or twice as my flatmate couldn't get his head in it but could in my helmet. Not very comfortable, I wouldn't like to crash in it, but certainly better than nothing.
Might give the base layers and socks a whirl

TBH the mic they use is one for an open face helmet, & its a right pain on a full face lid.
You can get a Bluetooth receiver from Amazon and plug your cheap helmet speakers into it to have wire free listening, but you won't be able to skip tracks or adjust the volume with these proper helmet devices

I've got a jabra blue clip dongle.
It's good for music and sat nav on the phone.
It beats my lazer bike specific set up heads down for volume.
Ok no good for phone conversation. But it's not a brilliant idea to be bimbleing about trying to chat at the same time. (or listen to Figaros Aria for that matter.)

For anyone thinking of buying some stuff from Lidl, Aldi are releasing their range very shortly.
Here's a link to a review of their range.

Sorry, might be me being slow on the uptake. Do you mean the eBay one won't allow track skipping etc but the lidl one will? My thought was that pressing the call button (assuming it is accessible) would allow my to use Siri to change tracks etc. I already have a Bluetooth car receiver which will do this but for some reason feels the need to keep beeping every 10 seconds - very annoying! Also not great for helmet fitting.

Yes, its just a receiver, for your headphones.
There's cheap bluetooth stuff on Ebay which mounts to the outside of the helmet

I've got one of the cheap ebay ones. Works pretty well actually for music/satnav on the move. Intercom side of it is also fine.
Phone calls on the move is another matter though...don't expect to hear much above 50mph....
I bought these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00D76EDDY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00
Can connect to ipod touch, skip, forward/rewind. Good sound quality. No tried intercom yet though.

I have those too.
Intercom works fine, good range too, plenty loud at speed.
8 hrs music/6 hrs intercom. No complaints so far in over a year of use.

Thanks chaps.
Derriboots were...If you're old enough to remember;)
Used those for years on my daily commute into London town. Not cool to look at but my feet were always warm and dry. Less cumbersome than wellies.
Just bought some Aldi kit for my son. The jacket is very good. I tried the boots but I wasn't convinced about the fit so gave them a miss. We also got the gloves which are more summer biased but fitted well.
I went into Aldi today to look at the boots. The fit was way too narrow in the leg and I couldn't get them closed nor could another biker who was also trying them on. Totally impractical for a touring boot.

FYI the Lidl Bluetooth kit is carp.
Mic doesnt work on the phone, intercom doesnt work full stop.
Music works well but you cant skip a track, just pause.
Gonna try and get a refund
