OMO Im hoping you can shed some light on my issue,

A few days ago I realised my bike was quieter than usual, I thought it was just me but yesterday my dad and stepmum both pointed it out as they can usually hear me coming a mile away when I visit.

I know its not just in my head because ill find myself leaving it in lower gears as it sounds quiet, but when I look down at the tacho I realise im only in 5th. I have also noticed the gear whine a lot more, I usually cant here it except for in 1st gear.

Does anybody have any suggestions for what to look for? If I was to describe the noise difference, it would be like shes not as deep and there is no idle rumble (it actually sounds stock on idle)

*It has a Beowulf 380mm can with no baffle

are you sure that you are running on both cylinders?

Yeah no decrease in power, found myself doing 100mph accidently this morning cos its that quiet.

I had 325 syndrome on my last SV so know what it feels like.

The only other issue I have had is when I started her up yesterday morning, started fine but instead of the revs going high like they usually do when you start it, they went really low and then came up like nothing had happened. I dont know how low as I started it and walked back into the house, its never done that before.

could be something like a poly bag partially blocking the air box intake. or something on top of the filter.

unless someone has put a baffle or rammed something in your exhaust then it has to be the induction end.

Could it be that one of the 4 sparks has give up?

could be.. pull each cap and see if it makes any difference.

how many miles are on the bike?

ooohhh and have you checked your oil lately.....

Oil, oil filter and air filter all changed 2 weeks ago (problem started approx 5 days ago) a lovely gizmo was fitted too :)

I have since checked oil level as soon as I noticed the issue (I checked because I can hear more engine noise as the exhaust isnt as loud)

Nearly 12k

OEM plugs should be good for 25+k no harm in checking them though.

^^^ I was thinking of this. Perhaps someone didn't appreciate it without one.

How old is the can? Just wondering if there might be some wadding in it that's come loose over time and is now bafffling the sound at the exhaust end. If the bike is running well but just quietly it sounds to me like the induction or exhaust is being muffled. And if performance is unaffected I'd guess it is more likely to be the latter.

Ok guys, had a light in the exhaust, i can see right down to the link pipe bend, the wadding is in perfect condition.

Had the airbox apart and the air filter is as clean as a whistle, apart from some black sponge thing covered in oil, i think thats the crank case overflow though?

The snorkel is also clear, i have no ideas. All spark caps are on properly etc

Fyi Bib,

I believe the plugs were changed at the last service around the 8k mark

Are you sure you are not getting hard of hearing? ;) Or have you forgotten the ear plugs you put in?

Or finally, did you turn down the master volume switch (next to the idle adjuster)

:)

only one other thing i can think of. when you put the end can on you had a slight leak and its now carbonated over sealing up the leak.

Maybe the can used to be so loud it has caused deafness.

Or, it seems to coincide with mine becoming much louder. Maybe there is a natural balancing of exhausts - as mine gets louder someone else's has to get quieter. (Although I had thought mine got louder just as a length of steel tube appeared on the garage floor next to the bike)

Any warranty left on it.

Bibio, I think that is the quite possibly the reason, it coincides with the fact I used to think my exhaust got louder when I was bombing round Wales in the Summer. E.G it would get really hot after 2 + hours and start to expand and blow slightly, I never looked into it though.

Gaz, Warranty on what? the bike yes but I fitted the can which was second hand off ebay

Can you imagine trying to explain the fault to your local dealer?

Really boring response, but has anything happened to your MPG? If either the induction or exhaust have radically changed you'd expect to find a corresponding change in MPG and possibly a change in performance when it gets up in the revs.

Not that I have noticed, I usually get 140 - 160 miles before the light comes on.

Not noticed any changes in performance, but its worth mentioning it has a throttle restrictor fitted so cant ever give it full beans anyway.
