Oh mighty org, I'm considering doing my 80 mile commute on a bike rather than train if it's cheaper.

It is a while since I had my sv and I never really paid attention to the economy ; does anyone know what sort of mpg they're getting?

I'm interested in all answers as I'd have to to buy a bike and will consider most things, not just sv.

Thank you, that's a really helpful site

I once measured 75 miles to the gallon on the SV on a rare long motorway journey sitting at steady motorway speeds.

Reason I bothered calculating was the odometer was up to 180 (from memory) miles since my last fill up and the light hadn't started coming on.

But yeah, 50 something is probably about right.

on a K7 Twin Spark over 25k i have averaged 61.08mpg, the worst being 55.21mpg and the best being 69.75mpg

i have just put a new rear on so i have gone through 5 rear and 4 front tyres. i'm still on my origonal chain and rear sprocket as i use a scottoiler. serviced every 3.5k

there is a thread on here somewhere where i calculated out the cost of my owning and running the bike per mile and it was about 10p inc insurance etc.etc.

another thing to consider when commuting is clothing, you dont want to be getting cold or wet so unless you already have decent all weather gear you need to invest in some.

I've already got decent kit from last time around, just no bike!

Thanks all for the input so far.

Typically 235 to 243 mile per fill, taking around 16 litres. What ever that works out at. That's cutting it fine, but if I hang on to 243 miles that's four days commuting and I can fill up at the cheap and convenient station. Best mileage 249, best fill up was 16.92L - just 80ml from having to walk.

MPG from new, starts high as running in, but after 3000 miles average of 56.1 mpg for the full 3237 miles. That is recording every fill for 7 months from Sept 1st, when I got the bike new.

But I am quite heavy handed, 6'2" and 17st, probably why less than others. :-)

http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/suzuki/sv650s/2009/nutsinatin/206207 This was my old 2009 bike, got around 60mpg on a 50 mile comute of B and A roads and motorways. My new 2009 bike is doing about the same, engine was dead tight when I bought it but it is loosening up and economy is improving http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle/suzuki/sv650s/2009/nutsinatin/345955 (ignore the first fill up, fuelly wont accept that I put 7L in when new and covered 0 miles.) I'm not killing it but I'm making the most of it especially on the B and A roads, due to a strange speedo error sometimes three figures appear on my dash rather than two. I tend to get 200 miles from around or just over 14L as that's where the petrol station falls every fourth day. Can see 250 miles if I'm more gentle, but that's less fun!

I must be doing something wrong, my light came on at 71 miles yesterday. Was a track day though...

Flat out, 70HP would use around 24 litres per hour. Sounds like you work wringing it out pretty well round that track.

I get 43-45 mpg from my y reg sv-s general riding, mostly a roads and a little city work.

I average 60 mpg doing a 80 mile round trip each day that is split 40:40 motorway to city. I brim the tank every two days for £11-13 depending on "wind direction" so works out about £130 a month.

It was off the road before xmas so I was on train for a month. It was costing me £250 a month and an extra 45 mins journey time each way (7.5 hours a week!).

Bike's a K8 and has recently gone over 30k

Somewhere between 40 & 50 on the SV depending on my mood.

On the vstrom though, I average ~72 and have even seen all the way up to 93.

The later SVs have twin sparks so they are better on fuel and that's the engine the vstrom has.

Not sure what my MPG is but I from a full tank (filled on the stand), the light comes on between 140-145 miles, most miles I've done before re-filling was 180 & the tank still had a litre or so in it.

This is a 90 mile round trip, 50 miles of it being on a motorway where Im riding 80-90mph all the way.

All through winter & when it rains, I use 1 of these: http://www.getgeared.co.uk/weise-thermal-rain-suit-wp-black - never been cold (apart from feet!) & doesnt let a drop in, even in the heaviest rain, I ride to work everyday & even when its been -5 I was still warm.

2008 (twin spark) 650 with 40k on the clock by the way

My 2001 SVS used to get nearly consistently 170 miles to the warning light. Which i think is 55mpg.

On a trip i managed 230 miles to the light, and sometimes if i did a series of sunday quick runs id see 140 miles to the tank.

Didnt think it was that good at the time after coming from a 125 doing nearly 120mpg, but now I've got the VFR im finding it was pretty good. The VFR does about 35-40mpg in the same conditions. But it is also a lot faster. So i shouldn't complain.

I've had as low as 80 miles before the light on my 02 and the highest I've seen is around 160.

I get between 130 and 140 miles before the light, quite often stretch it to 170 before filling (Solid light)

Worth noting though, I hammer it all the way up to the speed limit (95% of the time) and about 80% of my weeks riding is two up.
