View Full Version : OMO:Points
My eldest got caught back in January. Naturally she's not impressed, she got caught on a road she has used almost every day for 5 years.
My question is in regards to her insurance, the initial letter states that she got caught on 28/1. She sent that letter back indicating that she was indeed the driver. She has received her second letter giving her a few options. Her insurance is due on the 13th of March, hence the delay in sending letters back. She was informed by her insurance company that until she sends her paper counterpart and receives said points on it it's not valid. Her issue now is in regards of her renewal this week. When she informs them of points does she state the date of the crime 28/1? She's worried incase when she sends her paper counterpart that when it returns it'll have a different day on it.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I think that some insurance companies can do it with them pending. eg, your quote is £xx pending the outcome, it will go down to £xx if you don't get points.

Her best bet would be to call her insurance company and ask them this specifically, and as most companies record their phone conversations there will be a record of informing them and what they instructed her to do, in the unlikely event that evidence is required. The only example I have is that I had an accident 10/12/14, and my renewal was due March 2015. The accident is noted on my policy, but not valid until it is resolved so does not impact my insurance until the point at which it is settled. Obviously it get more complicated if switching companies etc. Sometimes you just can't beat speaking to a person.

I was told that once, then they changed their mind and blamed me for it.
When she does get her points it'll have a date on it which will be the date you use. I "think" it's normally the date of the offense.
I take it she cant do a speed awareness course in which case the insurance company wouldn't need to know?

As long as it's the date of the offence then she'll be a little more relaxed, I guess otherwise if it's not they wouldn't charge her extra to change it would they?
She's not elligble for the course due to the speed she was caught at, she's certainly not proud of it and she knows I'm disappointed in her.
i'm pretty sure that its date of conviction. you are not guilty until proven.

If I can find my paper licence when I get home I'll look for the date on my last set of points. Might be an idea to call the DVLA though.
I'm fairly sure that they backdate it to the date of the offense not the conviction but I wouldn't swear to it.

My last ones definitely from the date of the offence.
It's date of conviction, when I was caught in July when we all went for chips down the beach I didn't have to declare it until I was convicted just before new years. The counter part will have both dates so it's the date of conviction to go by

A big thank you from my daughter, she really appreciates the advice given. Ironically the points didn't effect her insurance but instead my wife increased it by £300 for a minor accident in October. Wife has been removed and my daughter is paying less than she had to last year. She paid the fine online, notified her work manager and will be sending both parts of her licence via recorded delivery in the next few days.

Notified her work manager?
Not like me then, my manager gets very shirty at the yearly licence check when new points keep appearing.

She's a little too honest at times. But it's funny about the insurance, you'd think it'd go up. Now granted she's learnt her lesson but I'm sure there's quite a few people who wouldn't care especially if their insurance doesn't increase.

6 points certainly does increase it. I think it's because so many people have 3 points nowadays.
