Hello folks, as many of you know Wifey and I have a pet Barn Owl called Alby, who we love, adore and cherish as one of the family (when she is not trying to savagely rip my face off because it is breeding season!).

Many of you may have even met her at the various biker events that we attend and there is nothing quite as sweet as seeing a big scary biker melting as a tiny little barn owl snuggles into their cheek for a cuddle.
Sadly we are not the only people to have pet Owls, especially with the Harry Potter books and movies popularising Owls as pets. We have also had some local traders here in Weston who have tried to profit from bird displays and falconry "experiences" that have resulted in birds being abused and kept in unsanitary cages.
Thankfully these birds have been rescued and are now living in beautiful clean surroundings and nursed back to health, along with the unwanted pets that have proved too much for small family homes (because no one expects to deal with that much poo for long, or the continuous vomiting up of pellets of mashed mice, chicks and rats).
Why am I telling you this you may ask? Well, if you have young children who love Owls or are the sort of adult who loves birds of prey, Avon Owls (http://www.avonowls.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=77&Itemid=435) have an open day coming up on the sixth of April. Head along for cuddles with these little monsters and you may even be able to fly a couple of them if you are lucky.

Obviously, as a keeper of a pet owl I am an interested party in this centre, but I also believe in educating people about these wonderful animals who are facing a loss of natural habitat, the threat of poisoning and even being shot in the wild.
