View Full Version : Am I an old fart?

Pretty much as I said, am I an old fart now?

I hardly bother to wash my bike because of the protective winter coating under the dirt. If some one asks me about my bike with out seeing it, I tell them I ride a moped and if new riders ask me a question about something, I tell them not to bother asking and just ride because they will learn.

I have also booked myself on to a Bike Safe course with the Rozzas in the hope that it will make me a safer rider and I have a high vis jacket for riding in bad weather.

I found myself cruising through the 30MPH street past the houses and kids playing outside at 27MPH just incase I had to brake suddenly.

It has happened, I have become an old fart, is it time to sell the SV and buy a nice comfortable and economical machine, probably a BMW or one of those car engined Honda abominations.

I hang my head in shame.

hmm you've got one foot in the grave alright, but there is always the other one. Keep the SV and pull some big minging wheelies, especially on Sundays, that'll clear the old cobwebs out.

I'm also with you on the Bikesafe and going slow bit but not so much the others, and working for a company paranoid about safety has given me a dislike of bright yellow. I seriously reckon you need a bit of crosstraining - have a stab at offroad, speedway, trails, something else, there are experience days for all of these (not the Red Letter variety, proper ones).

Sounds like it to me and I know about these things being one myself. Or maybe it is post-winter blues and once you get on the road in some sunshine things will change.... or you might sell your bike for some comfort.

I stopped biking a few years ago for similar reasons you state (apathy mostly), lasted 8 months before buying a ZX6R. The break renewed my need to ride.

Do you still enjoy riding, do you get out on the country lanes as a treat instead of the usual commute/roads? Courses are always good but is there something that is worrying you about safety in particular??

when in town slow down

why wash it when you can ride it instead

training is always good as long as you gain new skills. this depends entirely on who you get your training from, just because someone says that they are a riding instructor dont mean that they are any good

yes Jayne you are an old fart but we still love ya

Old - maybe, well riding like you are.
Fart - unsure I have never met you in person, so cannot comment on a possible flatulence problem.

I don't wash my bike that often either...plus I'm 40 next year so on my way to old too.

Keep riding Jayne, once you've sorted those sodding forks out you can give Silvie a good thrashing.

I nearly dropped my bike last year trying to move it while wearing slippers. They are my favorite footwear, a sure sign of getting old.

Unless you're riding everywhere flat out, on the back wheel wearing nothing but shorts and flip flops then you may as well just give up and get an electric shopping scooter.

If I were you, I'd get the Daily Mail delivered every day, sit inside bemoaning the state of the youth of today, then, when you've quite finished being daft, carry on as before!

27mph is fine, shows awareness of hazards. Training is fine, just enjoy it, even of you only learn one thing.

If you do buy a car, get yerself a yellow Citroen 2CV. I learned to drive in one! Lovely motor...

Pete ;)

As if further proof were needed, as I sit in the garage working on my bike all of the old ladies in our street walk by and say hello. Some even stop for a chat because we have so much in common.

I too have nearly dropped my bike while wearing slippers, I have also been caught rummaging in the garage while still wearing my PJs. However I am not sure if this is a sign of old age or of being a chav!

I was working on the bike this afternoon and was stopped by one of our local old ladies who has a most beautiful puppy, only about ten weeks old and so playful. She was adorable and I even got to have a cuddle. Then she bit my thumb... Did I complain? Oh no, I did that old lady thing and said "Oh isn't she sweet!"

Right, I am off to price up a Honda Jazz and see if I can bulk order Tenna Lady! ;-)

I changed the air filter on the BMW while in my PJs and Winnie the Pooh dressing gown. The big pockets give you somewhere to put the tools you need.

Does it matter if you're an old fart or not? It'll be a sad day you're not happy to do your own thing.

Maybe we could all club together and do a group buy on Sanatogen (fortifies the over 40's).

If you smell of wee, yes you are an old fart.

I do smell of wee, but only when I have been nursing the Grandson! He has tried a couple of time, but so far it has only been wee he has got on me! It is his first Birthday next week, so we have bought him a trainset. We would have got him a bike, but his Dad already got him a mini moto for when he can walk! :smt119
