View Full Version : More fuel for long desolate trips

I'm planning a 3000 km round trip this summer to Thunder Bay, Ontario, which is on the north west shore of Lake Superior. I've flown my homebuilt that route many times and always worried about fuel. I've been told that a a bikes limited range (compared to automobiles) isn't a real problem when taking the Trans Canada highway. But rather prepared than not.

I found these 1.25 liter aluminum bottles at a surplus store for $0.49 each. The plastic inner stopper seems to be fuel resistant, as is the o-ring I added for a good seal.

I used some .25" aluminum bar stock, 8 mm stainless screws and a SS T-bolt hose clamp. I want to mount this assembly using the rear foot peg attach points. The spacers are long enough to keep the bar off the nice finish on the bracket.

Without the bottle inserted, you could use them as stirrups, if you were so inclined:)

They are nicely out of the way and secure. I've been running with the bottles full to see how it stands up to road use. It's only 2.5 liters extra running time, but it may get me to the next town while traversing bear and moose country.

very neat solution. when the light starts flashing and you pop those in you should get about 80 UK miles before your pushing.

Nice bit of engineering. Any issues with having the fuel bottle that close to the exhaust in terms of vaporisation/expansion/boiling?

No issues yet. It's 2 inches above the passenger foot peg is. I haven't had any complaints from my wife about a hot foot. But like any none vented fuel container, there will always be a pressure differential from atmosphere with temperature changes. You need to open the cap slowly away from sources of ignition.

Have a word with Pyro about converting your bike to diesel. You can get more mpg that way.

Great solution. I keep meaning to get an emergency bottle to carry a litre or so.

Very neat, but I can't help but think the bolt holding the clamp on looks a bit weedy :)

I'm going by the spec of the screw. It's a #10 SS aviation screw, rated at 120,000 PSI shear strength. For a demonstration a few years ago, a friend and I tested in front of a crowd of people, a single aluminum solid rivet, loaded double shear to lift a 500 lb chunk of concrete.

This is loaded single shear and in tension though. I was going to drill for two screws, but got lazy.
