View Full Version : Any Bmw 2.0l Diesel owners out there?
Heads up. I'd you have mainly a 1 series 2.0L oil burner with the engine code N47 then give BMW a call as there is a recall on the timing chain tensioner. Not all are affected. Just have your chassis number to hand.
It may affect the 3 series with checking.
My mates 08 120 and my 123 are both affected.
Pass this on as it's not common knowledge.
It is only 07-08 car currently that BMW are doing anything about

They were the first n47's, they must have found the problem and sorted it on the later models.
is this only on 1 series? That engine is in pretty much all the model's but with different power ratings. I'm m47 on the 5 series but there is ones the same year with n47's.
I only know of one issue with mine and I sorted it when I bought it. Well it's not really a problem if you service it properly. Micro filter on the crank case breather clogs and causes the turbo to blow oil past its seals. It's in the computer to be changed but no one does it. Mine was the upgraded version the gets rid of the filter.
I believe it is currently only on one series that the 'quality enhancement' is for. The engine was use in a hell of a lot of cars, 1,3 and some 5 series!!

And yes, 2011 onwards had a revised crankshaft and different tensioners. If you want to read up on it, babybmw has shed loads of threads on the problem. But given the number of cars sold to the number of know problems, the % is tiny.

Yeah there was all this hoohar going round about the swirl flaps on my old e46, apparently they would break off and go into the engine. When I stripped the head down to look at them I could see no way of them coming off so I left them.
I don't know why there's this stigma of bmw's being crap, both have been the most reliable cars I've downed hence buying another. They certainly are a lot more reliable than there equivilant audi and mercs. My mate works for imperial cars fixing and prepping all the high milage dogs from auction. The only cars he gets in that require little or no work are beemers and mercs and if they need work its only because they're ex rep cars and have been abused.

I tried very hard to keep a straight face when asking my mechanic if my swirl flaps were going to cause me any problems. I failed.
