View Full Version : Sat Nav on Phones
Has an app been invented that allows you to use custom itineraties on an Android device like you can with a TomTom rider yet?
My TomTom Rider 2 is creaking away but It's not going to last much longer and I don't really fancy shelling out £300 on a new one.

I don't like iPhones but you can get TomTom software to run on iPhone as a native navigation. Practically the same as a specific sat-nav unit. My daughter has it on her iPhone with lifetime map updates, works really well and is why she sticks with iPhone.
So if your phone is due an upgrade might be worth looking at?
EDIT: Just discovered that since April this year there is a TomTom app for Android. Available in the Play-store

Bloody sat navs, never trust them to get you down south by the shortest route

Yes.
I used this procedure to copy the March Meat run, which was created in Google maps, then converted and run in Co Pilot. The trickiest part was finding the folder Co Pilot stores the routes in
http://asphaltsea.org/co-pilot-for-android-import-procedure
If you use Tyre for route planing then it should be easier to import the route into Tom Tom?
Might also depend which folder Tom Tom stores routes?
Co Pilot was free without voice prompts, but I paid for the voice prompts and European mapping.
I've installed Co Pilot on my 10in Samsung Galaxy tablet, as its got GPS!
TomTom on Android does not support itn files...............as far as I know.
I used to use Co-Pilot then they introduced some stupid online license check every time you start it up making it useless when out in the middle of nowhere with no signal, or abroad but I'll give it a second look.

That Route Converter tool will convert into many different route formats, so you'll probably find one that works with Tom Tom.
Co Pilot is annoying, as when it updates it forget the licence, but then I go into settings & it reinstalls the licence code. Can't remember the exact procedure.
I don't have that issue with Co Pilot and never have done
Thanks, I'll have a look into it :)
lenny whats up with the tomtom?

I use the GPS on my Note 3, which is planted on the left clipon with an X-Grip RAM mount, specifically the phone variant and not the Phablet ( avoid unless you've a tablet ).
This is then connected via BT to my Sena, feeding me directions over audio. It's not enough, especially when in the city, so the ability to lean over and turn the screen on ( which skips the unlock screen if locked when in the Maps application with navigation active ) and off again in a single press to get an idea just how many turns ahead my turning is, is absolutely wonderful.
Also means I can run a commonly known speedcam warning application, that'll siren at intervals before approaching common mobile and static spots. Alternatively, there's Waze. I'm not a fan of the maps, but the community reporting is apparently worthwhile.
I've used Co Pilot since the first HTC Desire. Was only £20 back then.
I have built up routes on the phone and then saved them to the phone.
Not had issues with licences now it's on my 5th phone (Sony Z1)that's 1 1/2 years old.

Used waze in the volvo via ipod & app radio.
Needs an Internet connection to work properly. But it's handy in high volume traffic.
The TomTom sometimes refuses to charge, hangs quite a lot and unless I pre-plan the route and I'm very careful about the waypoint locations it takes me on the strangest routes.
I downloaded Co-pilot and paid for the full version about 4 years ago as I was planning a camping weekend in North Wales and knew I wouldn't have any signal. Every time I started the app it had to sign in and needed 3g, as I didn't have any signal it was useless and since then I've just used Google Maps
Um. You e mailed Co Pilo?
Never been like that on my phones.
Sarah used it on a huddle and that's not got any Internet unless it's indoors.

a spray with contact cleaner should sort that out.
when was the last time you cleared the faves and routes out.
all spaznavs that i have had have been the same. i use gmaps TYRE and set the waypoints to about 80 for 300miles that way it keep me on track rather the what it decides. its also sometimes how the nav is set up e.g. shortest, quickest etc.etc

I have co-pilot and it works great. Can take a little while to find a GPS signal to start but otherwise works fine without need for Network coverage, license check or any mobile data requirement.
Larger routes in the likes of Google maps are best avoided if you are thinking of converting and transfering onto it as they generate 100s or even 1000s of waypoints causing it to crash. Instead for largere routes it can be easier to plot on the web, input the start and finish points into the App and then (using the web route for reference) add in your own waypoints until the route is as you want.
