View Full Version : Dambuster trip
Has anyone done much touring of Germany, specifically near the Ruhrer dams and Soest. I've a weekend trip coming up and know little about the area. I'd be interested to hear about an good roads, places of interest and to eat.

I have not been there since I was child (forces Brat) and grew up near one of the dams. It is startlingly beautiful and well worth the effort of a visit. I would love to go back there one day.
Have a great trip and check out Trip Advisor on line for good places to stay, it has not let us down yet.
Thanks Jayne. I'll have lots of photos to bore you all with when I return.

Hi John, I did a Dambuster run in 2012 and it was an interesting trip. We camped so I can't recommend any hotels. The trick is to get into the area and out again avoiding the large cities. I have a round route I put together from Calais and there are some interesting places on the way there and back. Are you camping?
Fen. Not camping. We're heading to Dunkirk for one night and then to Arnsburg for two nights. We then move on to Bastogne. Its a very long weekend.

You are sure to have a great time. I found the roads near to the dams to be good but largely covered by blanket low speed limits. The other area in Germany I have ridden is the Black Forest where the riding is outstanding. Visiting the dams is a moving experience and worth the effort. As you might expect there is not much mention of the raid on the information boards at the dams so worth reading up before the trip. We skimmed by Chimay, Spa, and the Nurburgring on the way there and the Moselle /Bastogne on the way back. I don't think you can go wrong. The great thing is the number of countries and cultures to be seen in a relatively short time. Hope you have a fun and safe trip.
Thanks Fen. Sometimes it's best not to plan too much and get a few surprises on the route. I agree your comments about cultures and that's one of the reasons I enjoy these trips so much.
Well I've been there and got back yesterday. I great trip and some wonderful scenery.
Here are some photos of the Mohne dam and other places along the way.

Mission accomplished. Good photo reconnaissance too, I like the pic of the Fenland Ferrari being refuelled.

Looks like you had good weather for it. Love the wood carvings on the buildings in Soest. Fenland Ferrari - snigger.

You should have heard it. Single cylinder diesel of some huge capacity. The owner did try to explain but he had no English and I no German.

Yes in any old town it's always worth looking up otherwise you can miss some treats. No idea why you would carve donkey heads though.
The weather was very sunny but not particularly warm, but I'll take that over rain any day.
