View Full Version : The 4 seasons. A Photo documentary of the UK through the seasons.

Rather than clog up the Photo a Day thread, I thought I'd put these pics in a new place.

I thought we could all do with pointing our cameras at our world in such a way that the seasons are recorded as they change across the UK.

Spring is well and truly here, and as a harbinger of new life, it's as good a place to start a thread as any.

So, the idea is, you go out, photograph your world as often as you please, however you see it changing. Be it nature, people, ladies dressing less, or wrapping up as winter approaches, middle aged men in shorts, the emergence of the first scarves, or places changing as the seasons pass. Nature will feature strongly, or not, depending on your metier!

My "vision" is of a thread that documents the UK for the next twelve months. It should be locked on the 4th May 2016. The title of the thread can be changed as each season arrives (nudge nudge mod Richie)

Here's my first contribution, please feel free to contribute, critique, chat and ask questions all over this thread.

I was trying to avoid weeding the borders so wandered about the estate here at Trev Towers snapping the spring flowers instead. Trouble is I then had less time to finish the weeding to get it all done so I can have the day to myself/the bike tomorrow...

The blossom on the ornamental cherry is just going over - we had quite a downpour last night and it's showing the damage.

The Dicentra is showing us very clearly why it's common name is Bleeding Heart.

The apple trees are showing a healthy load of blossom this year. Let's hope we don't have a late frost like last year that killed off every fruit bud!

And the Lilac is finally coming out. This is usually one of the first blousy shrubs to show it's colours but I don't think it liked the really dry/warm weather we had over Easter.

Cheers Trev for joining in, the dicentra is superb!

My apple is in full bloom, more than I can remember, Here's hoping for a good crop. Mine are being made into cider this year.

Our wisteria will be in full bloom soon, fingers crossed for some sunshine to show it off.

At the end of his legs there are some decent sized hooks that presumably he uses to hook things or hook onto things. :-)

Not that fortunate. We had an infestation of the grubs of these wretched things in the autumn and the foxes, badgers and crows ripped my lawn to pieces.

I thought theywere after cranefly larvae, aka leatherjackets ?

We get Leatherjackets every year but not much damage from the birds that hoik them out. For some reason the weather was kind to the Cockchafrers last year and we now know it was them as they eat the roots of the grass causing larges patches of it to die off (thanks for that Google). The bigger foragers like the badgers and foxes look for this tell tale sign it would seem and rip up the area to get at them. I found several (larvae that is, not lawn-damaging mammals) when I was tidying up - they're bigger than Leatherjackets and I guess worth looking for, in a sort of I'm a Celebrity kind of way. :pukel:

Amadeus
27-05-15, 11:22 AM
Sir Trev, the larvae are definitely edible*. I'll donate £10 to charity if you post a vid of you (or one of your children if you don't like the thought of doing so) eating one.

* I'm not 100% sure that they're edible but I can't believe they'd kill you. Certainly not if you gave them to your kids.

That is very philanthropic of you but I'd rather stump up the Tenner myself and avoid the entire trauma of either of those scenarios. As both Lady Poppy and my daughter avidly watch the Geordie Dwarves they're well aware of the term Bushtucker Trial and would twig what I was up to if I tried to entice them with either Leatherjackets or Cockchafer grubs.

I'm glad you know your plants and flowers! I must admit, I'm much better at birds and birdsong. I think I'll be getting a book to help me ID things out in the field.

That's gorgeous Trev. There's something really sumptuous about May blossom and I love that slightly peppery scent from it too. It's still going strong here, especially on the higher ground.

I'm really lucky Pete, in that I grew up and have lived nearly my whole life in the country, so I've been surrounded by this stuff for the majority of my 61 years! Wouldn't want it any other way either...

I see your puny northern temperature and raise you to a Milton Keynes just-after-work-getting-in-the-sweaty-car one. Sorry about the dust. It took half an hour with the AC on full blast to get down to a sensible temperature on the way home too.

I also seem to have slightly better fuel economy than you too*, which is surprising considering the stop-go nightmare that are the roundabouts in MK.

*a note to all who use the "black" nozzle at the filling station. Nobody cares how many millions of miles you get from a gallon of diseaseal. I'll stick with petrol and an Ecoboost turbo 150 engine thanks :smt023.
