Hmmm, duel boot with the latest version of Ubuntu...:smt055

If it carries on being this good, I may scrap the Windows altogether. :smt024

By the way, I owe Nemesis a huge hug for fixing the "glitches" in my version of Windows Seven. That guy rocks. :smt023

And proud! :D

What's so good about it?

The first thing to note is the speed at which it works. Start up takes a few seconds and I can use the computer. With all of the updates I have had of late, Windows now takes about two minutes before I can use the computer and even then it runs slow.

There a couple of issues that I have had with Win7 of late when it developed a hatred of one of my optical drives, forcing me to remove it from the computer. My computer has a mix of sata and the older ribbon cable drives. The optical drive was on a ribbon cable and one day it simply stopped working after an update. It took Nemesis several goes and then eventually us removing the optical drive to make it better. Ubuntu has none of this.

Program start times are very fast. Opening a Libre office document takes roughly fifteen seconds. On the Win 7 OS, opening a word doc took closer to 90 seconds if not longer.

Processor and memory seems to run more efficently, the whole computer runs like she did when she was new.

As with any new OS, I am still getting used to the way things work. I tried to watch a DVD and discovered that I could not get play back. Despite many minutes of trying, I got nothing. Then I discovered that I had told it not to play DVDs when I set it up! Once I had unchecked the box, they played perfectly and also go straight to the menu, none of that "Would you steal a movie even though you have clearly bought this DVD?" nonsense.

I run duel monitors and setting this up on Win 7 was a pain and took ten minutes. It also developed a glitch after an update and I had to remove this update from the system. Ubuntu switched on and asked me how I wanted to configure both monitors, did I want the menu on each one so that I had access to it even if I had full screen aps in use. It intuitively knew that the monitors were in place and it did not merely give me one screen, but shown on both monitors as Windows does when setting this up.

Virus protection. I downloaded an excellent virus checker, but being Linux, there are not many if any virus codes out there. One thing I did not know is that most servers run on Linux (according to the company that I got the checker from), so they tend to be quite virus proof. I am sure that if someone really wanted too, they could write one, but given that it is opensource and they seem to love tinkering with it, it would not last very long.

The interaction with the system is just really nice, I am still learning my way around and every now and again I try to do access a function that Windows did, but get frustrated because I have not bothered to read the instructions. After a quick go through the help forum I usually go "Ohhhhh, that is how you do it" and then feel silly for not reading the instructions first. :smt046

Anyway, I am enjoying playing with this. I am such a nerd... :geek:

i would say its more a hardware issue you have (components getting old) rather than the OS. i run win7 with office removed from the startup menu and it takes not even 1sec to start a document. computer boots in about 40secs. win7 has been very stable.

unless its a addon card then having both IDE and SATA on the same board indicates that the board is indeed old.

so yes Linux will indeed be better than Windows in your case.

its a llloooooonnnggg time since i have used any form of Linux so it must have come on leaps and bounds, intriguing.

I use a combination of Windows, OSX and Linux daily and I get the impression a lot of what you're associating with your fresh install of a new OS could have been achieved by an equally fresh install of Windows.

Is a that where the 2 operating systems have to fire pistols at 20 paces and the winner loads? Sounds ossum

I have found the latest ububtu to be a bit bloaty to be honest. I found mint to run a lot better.

Windows 8.1 is just as smooth though.

Sounds like you could do with an ssd. My Windows 7 boots in about 12 seconds, and a word doc takes 3-4 secs to load.

I love nerds!
They're so sweet!

At least the candy!
Not too keen on the other ones, mind you. :p

SSD's are awesome! Similar boot speed on an old Celeron Win. 7 machine running Media Centre Browser on the TV. Currently have 334 DVD's on an external disk.

Mint is decent, nice and light. It's on my old mini laptop.

SSD's ftw.

Or if you really need space, get a hybrid drive.

I have an old xps 420 desktop, was getting real sluggish under win7 so I did a complete format, set it it as RAID and put 64bit win8 on and now it runs like a dream.

It was probably just filled with crap over the years and having a fresh install was all that was needed.

4 year old laptop on Win 7 vastly improved by fitting a hybrid drive, halved boot up and shutdown times and generally a bit quicker. 5 year old laptop improved a bit but not to the same degree, still basically slow and cr@p. Put original drive back in and installed Kubuntu (12.04 LTS version for proper nerds reading) and it works like a dream. Only problem is going to be lack of iPlayer because the download for later software only runs on Windows or Mac.
