Hey all,

Looking for some advice/tips for when I give my SV650s K5 a service. It currently has 25k miles on it and I bought it at about 20k miles, no real SH other than it was MINT and looked after well.

I have only really done little bits here and there like oil/filters etc and never done a proper service since buying about 5000 miles ago.

So far this is what I have planned and have the bits ordered:
- Air filter clean/oil
- Oil change including filter
- Coolant flush/change
- Chain adjustment (again! This might be on its way out as it keeps going really slack)
- Chain clean and oil with my new MUC off Chain DOC!!! Looky (http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTAwMFgxMDAw/z/d7EAAOxybxlTmH9f/$_35.JPG)
- Front calliper rebuild (new seals and all)
- Fit new front braided lines
- TPS adjustment
- Bleed/new fluid in rear brake (already braided)

This has already been done:
- Brake pads (1000 miles ago)
- Spark plugs (4000 miles ago)
- Fuel system was serviced about 2000 miles ago as I had a few issues and took it to a garage so bodies balanced/ fuel lines checked/ injectors checked etc
- Everything else is always kept clean and any pivots/pegs/levers and kept WD40'd

Other points:
- Forks need upgrading with new springs and oil but for now no leaks so will leave this for now.
- Disks have some surface rust creeping through but are smooth and do not have a lip on them.
- Tyres are meaty although my rear has a slow leak. I think it only leaks while cold and I there is nothing visually wrong. Would this suggest a fitting issue?

I have a Haynes manual a halfords 150pc kit and a brain. Is there anything else I can do/check while I'm going to be going through the above?

I read things about people neglecting swingarm bearings? This worrys me, I may be one of these people. Apparently very tricky to get to and I wouldn't know what to do when I get to it either :P

Would the org also advise taking it to a garage after doing my own service to get a proper one done? Given the list of the things above I would have already done would there be any point or would the garage just be double checking my handywork for a large fee? :P

only big problem with doing the swingarm/linkage bearings is getting the old ones out. they are a RPITA, main swingarm ones are easy, lower ones are a nightmare, linkage ones are soso but require a vice. having done them all i can assure you it wont be a day to do them.

i'm looking at making a removal/drift tool for the swingarm lower bearings as there is no way without heat that they are coming out and if you do use heat your going to ruin the paint. i tried using a blind bearing puller with no luck.

i doubt that your work will be any worse than theirs. when were the valves checked?

When I brought it at 20k miles I was assured the normal manufacturer advised valve checks/shims where done and I needn't worry about it. Meant to be done at 15k miles or something I believe?

Sounds like I might need a garage for swingarm linkage bearings (if they need doing that is) not sure on the interval for this but wanted to just do as much as possible money permitting so that I can start building some proper service history and I know all bases are covered when MOTS are due or if I was to sell on.

if your going to get a garage to replace all the swingarm and linkage bearings your looking at a bill for £350>.

you can do a quick check yourself. if the middle bearing spacer on the linkage knuckle is pitted/rusty then its a sure bet the rest are fubar. to check the spacer your going to have to pop the bike on an abba stand.

:o big bill. That will have to be left for now then, as you advise I will do the visual checks to make sure its not getting dangerous.

I will have a proper crack at that when I swap the rear shock as itl be hoisted and more open to play with.

No paddock or Abba stand at the moment just a hammer under the RH swing arm I'm afraid to get the rear wheel spinning... Have been keeping eyes peeled on eBay for local Abba stands.

you can turn the foot pegs round and use axle stands.

I somehow managed this without turning the footpegs.
