12v cigarette lighter question

Hi all,

My cigaretter lighter socket has stopped working, I have it set up as 2 sockets one is a car extention plugged into a another socket for a bike as the bike one wasn't long enough, the bike one seems to have packed up, if I cut the wires on the car extention and wire it directly to the battery will this work?

I have mine wired directly to the battery, with an in-line fuse just in case of a problem.

If I were to do it again, I think that I would also fit a switch so that I could turn it on and off.
