Its not going to be an awesome project thread but i like documenting stuff.
History,
I took this basic k5 from this:
http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq106/ARphotographs/25613_402252390978_7660452_n.jpg
To this beauty:
http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq106/ARphotographs/182125_10151092258570979_1959338060_n.jpg
BUT i sold her back in 2014 (and owner made her ugly again)
with a brief 3 month stint with a cbr:
http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq106/ARphotographs/cbr2.jpg
I sold her as it was too easy to be doing double the speed limit and just didn't have the engine breaking i loved from my 7 years with an SV.
So now.....
http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq106/ARphotographs/11231208_10153382695455979_3174723822162228073_n.j pg

and how i feel when ever i ride her!
http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq106/ARphotographs/11701105_10153394768205979_849063368154735727_n.jp g
She has dual harpoon exhausts (never herd of them myself)
I've de-snorkeled her.
Just re-sprayed the pillion cover and infills to match the bike.
She has heated grips, but the control unit died when a pigeon garotted itself in the cables and unit with the previous owner, wiring is still there so just need to get a unit for it.
I've got a spare seat coming so i can make her a super comfy mile muncher.
Now the next plan (along with service and tps adjustment and sorting sticky keys) Is to make her more colourful and unique, I think bright colour may be on the cards!!

Nice one! Looking forward to see how this turns out. One thing that improves the look of K3/K4 nakeds is changing that big wide radiator to a more compact K5> one

Hmm, i hadn't thought of that!
But i like the chunky look of it.

Great looking bike! I'll look forward to your progress!
I like the idea of the narrower radiator as mine does stick out rather a lot and its looking grubby with the black finish coming off.
......to the ebay!!

No the naked has a lockable filler cap. The S ones have a bit of rubber tube then the cap

Cheers guys.
Chucca, only really need 3rd to cruise over it.
If pushing it I'll use 2nd and torque throws you out the corners.
Nice, were I to get another SV it would be a naked thou.
Assuming Aberfoyle in second to last pic and Tyndrum in the last? I generally do the Dukes Pass in second the whole way.
Oh and CBR's are awesome you shoulda kept it :p

Been looking but all the rads for the thou are the same no matter what year as far as I can see.
Anybody else looked?
DarrenSV650S
11-07-15, 06:36 PM
Ahh the thou's have taller radiators than the 650 and they all seem to be the same size as you say. The 650 K3 radiator is a lot wider. Sorry to waste your time :)

You are correct,
we know the owner of real food stop very well so always stop there instead of green welly!
Nah cbr was too easy to ride fast, and you needed to use brakes as there was no engine breaking which is one of my main things, i don't like using brakes.
CBR did do 140 far to easy as well!
SV being naked keeps me under the ton!
Plasti-dip ordered!!
Nice, were I to get another SV it would be a naked thou.
If i were to get another SV, it would be a 1000 Anniversary with a gixxer front end. :smt055

I'd agree the anniversary issue is beautiful,
but they are sitting around £2.5k
I got this lovely beast for £1.8k
My cbr i bought in march for £1.8k and sold in July for £2150!
i like it the way it is apart from the mirrors, silly lights and the cross brace on the bars. i dont think it needs chavving up. maybe keeping the lights i would add a screen.

I'd take off the rad covers too. Back to a standard sigle lamp and you're getting there. BIt of satin black on the radiator sides if they are tatty. Mind you I may be a bit baised as I've got a pretty standard looking silver K3N and love it just the way it is!

I don't like the single lights, so i'm sticking with the twin lights on the twin.
I don't like the mirrors, but can't seem to find any decent replacement and most seem to use bar end mirrors which i don't like as i love filtering.
I don't want a screen because if i wanted plastics, i would have bought an S.
Might paint the radiator and oil cooler covers black but i like the protection after the state my k5's got in.
I like chavving it up as it makes it unique and not "just another bike" but i'm looking at maybe getting a 2nd hand pc3 and getting the map sorted for the exhausts and de-snorkel.
Iridium plugs have been dispatched and hopefully it'll stop the stutter at 7k revs.
I quite like the look of these. Unforunately they are crap quality but I like the style. Should match the frame shape quite well.
I may get a pair just to see what they look like.

Excellent. As soon as you get them can you tell me if they look as ropy around the lens as the picture makes out. I really like the style but they do look a bit rough around the edges.

Well time to update: (beware you may not like this! but i've not done it for others)
I got myself 2 cans of Plasti-dip Blaze orange,
I learnt that 1 can of Plasti-dip equates to 1/2 a normal can of spray paint, probably due to it being rubber.

I've ordered 3 more cans, so i can get front mud guard and belly pan done and then go over everything again to give it a thicker coat.
Benefit of plasti-dip is that if i don't like it, then it all peels of and i'll go back to standard silver.
Never mind all that, do those mirrors look better finished than the ebay photo suggests?

Also, if you've not done so already, take the steering damper off. Improves handling about a million%. Unless of course yours has been serviced and/or replaced recently in which case improvement may be a bit lower.

Yeah I read the threads about it. Checked mine and it runs nice and smooth. I have no issues with turn in and can feel when the front end is coming up.
remember and notify DVLA and your insurance company of the colour change. if you dont you will get pulled by the plod as the bike will come up as silver.

How does the handling improve Mark h ?... steering damper is fitted to stop any tank slappers from getting out of control...
this is a tank slapper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZ1srcQMa_0 all others are speed wobbles. once a bike goes into a true tank slapper there is nothing you can do. even a steering damper wont help as the forces are very violent. its like a bridge going into oscillation.
It would appear the damper was fitted to the SV1000 only because the TL1000 was a bit of a handful.
In general bog standard damper will meke turning the bars "stiffer" Once they get worn they lost their consistency so will be stiff on part of the travel and free running on others or even stick in places. Mine had all sorts of problems including air in it so it was jerky as hell. I since cleaned it up and replaced the oil and it's a lot smoother but not refitted to the bike.
Imagine somone randomly turning up and down a stiffness adjuster on your handlebars and that's what mine was like. All kinds of random front end behaviour when in bends and weeesh wooosh noises when doing 3 point turns.
Took it off and it all handled a lot lighter and far more consistently. Got some feel back from the front wheel when in bends and could feel the front end going light under power all of which were missing when the damper was fitted.
So far as I can see, unless you are a ham-fisted lunatic or have oodles of power a damper is just bling and bling that hampers your handlling in my experience is anything to go by.
If I get a tankslapper starting, I simply pull a wheelie, let it settle down. put the front wheel down then complete the overtake as if nothing had happened*
See the guy at 1:17 in this video for a "how-to"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzB6KSlD6ec
However, if you fancy fitting or retaining a damper then feel free to do so just make sure it does not get jerky.
Cheers,
*yea right! Personally I don't ride like a ham-fisted lunatic.

but its not permanent, i can peel it all off and then its silver.
yes but the police can seize it if they believe that its not what it is supposed to be, you will then have to prove that it is the bike you say it is and to top that off you will have to pay the impound fee's to get it back. it takes any little excuse these days for the police to do wtftl.
if you crash it then your insurance in null and void as well.
i'm not trying to be negative i'm trying to help
Not to mention that of course Silver is the best colour anyway :)
ScottishRawker

if the police stop me and say its not what it is meant to be, i will peel off the coating and they will see its silver.
then no impound costs
i'm afraid it wont work like that. no matter what excuse you try and give them they WILL take the bike from you if they feel like it and there is NOTHING you can do about it. do you honestly think the police are going to stand there and let you peal the plastic coating off the bike.. they dont care.
as i said i'm not trying to put a downer on what you have done i'm trying to help.
you cant just go changing the colour of your bike/car anytime you feel like it or we would all be doing it.

Yep I know the crap steering damper gets air in it as I've had all that bother too...But when hard on it or at track day ****ing about I know the steering damper does come in handy...I've got a fairly new ie no air bubbles GSXR 750 fitted to mine and would never leave home without it....:D
I'm pretty sure you don't need to notify the DVLA of a wrap/plastidip as it is temporary not a permanent colour change.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
not anymore. you must notify the DVLA of a full colour change.
https://evolutionsigns.co.uk/dvla-vehicle-wrap-policy/ and a few other sites are saying the same.
i'm saying this just in case of the possibility that the police might take offence. is it really worth taking the risk. any excuse will do the police these days to get cash from the public.

It takes 4 weeks for dvla to update their system to show a colour change. I may find it rubs off around my knees and remove it all before then.

Mirrors have arrived and don't look corroded at all. I went with Matt black though.
The tail of the bike seems to have got an air bubble from a gap at the cowl infill so looks like it'll get peeled off and I'll do something different.
So glad I didn't instantly inform dvla as id need to wait 4 weeks to get my v5 and resubmit it to be silver again which would take another 4 weeks.

Why not register as R? R = Multi-Coloured (For vehicles with 3 or more colours)
From
DVLA Colour Codes
Colour Code Description on Registration Certificate /Other colours incorporated
S Beige / Buff
P Black
J Blue
B Bronze
A Brown
V Cream / Ivory
G Gold
H Green
L Grey
T Maroon
K Purple / Mauve, Violet
E Orange
D Pink
C Red
M Silver / Aluminium
U Turquoise
N White
F Yellow
R Multi-Coloured (For vehicles with 3 or more colours)
Note: Where a vehicle has 2 colours, both colour descriptions and codes should be entered on the V55 form,
e.g. Beige and Cream = Coded as SV.

Going from experience with changing the colour of the bike through DVLA, I agree it needs doing but I've never had any issues. I've had two SV's now both were blue that got sprayed Orange... I sent the form off the dvla and they ignored it and sent it back as being blue, on three occasions. The last one was sent with a cover note and dated/ signed etc, still no luck.
every time I've been pulled they've questioned it but always sent me on my way. I just cut them off and make a joke of 'yeh I know youre gunna tell me it's supposed to be blue'.
So yeh, do it.. but it isn't the be all and end all, least not for the bobbys round here (this has happened on about 6/7 occasions?)

next part of project, project comfy bum!
I bought a spare k3 seat for a member on here,
also bought myself a gel pad,
http://i438.photobucket.com/albums/qq106/ARphotographs/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0092.jpg (http://s438.photobucket.com/user/ARphotographs/media/Mobile%20Uploads/DSC_0092.jpg.html)
I used a breadknife to cut into it,

then recovered and stapled,

it looks not bad i'd say.
Bum test will happen soon just not tonight!

Well Someone is a fanny,
yeah thats me!
I really should have fitted the seat on the bike before making it into a gel seat.
It doesn't line up.
This is annoying as the bike reg is a 54 reg, but according to all the documentation, its actually a k3.
but the seat i got from another member was for a k3.
So unless its a very early k4 with parts saying k3
Now do i butcher my current seat and this one and make a correct gel seat,
or do i sell gel seat and buy another spare and repeat?
DarrenSV650S

Yours is definitely a K4. It has the bend in the subframe, and the different shape of black diamonds.
This is a K3

I see the difference in the black diamonds
can't see the subframe bend that you mentioned.
Right, time to sell a k3 gel seat!
Easy to spot the difference. Park a K3 next to a K4+ and you'll find all the ladies will flock around the rider on the K3. No idea why, it just happens. Right pain when you are trying to just get on with stuff.
From memory the SV1000 K3 naked always had the lower seat & subframe that was introduced to the SV650 in the K4. It was the odd one out in the K3 line up that then became the norm in the K4s.
DarrenSV650S
23-07-15, 03:57 PM
See how the K3 subframe follows the elegant straight line of the tail :smt055
While the K4 just weaves its way randomly towards the end of the bike :pukel:
