View Full Version : Ignition Switch

My '00 650 ignition switch has stopped working. (I'm probably not using the search function properly... but I can't find any good info.)
Anyway, I have a good battery and plenty of power to the ignition switch, but no power going out from the switch to the things that need power to work.
I suspect it's a mechanical problem, that the key isn't moving the switch into the "on" position.
I haven't taken it off yet and taken it apart to look at it.
Is it worth my time to try to fix the switch? Can it be fixed?

Hi < I wouldnt bother trying to repair it. Its given 15 years of service, treat the bike to a new one. Itll pay for itself in no time

My '05 is getting similar now in that I need to get it just right to flick from steering lock to on.

I found a tip at SVRider forums.
The plastic block that holds the movable contacts can be installed two ways, and changing to the position that hasn't been used fixed mine. IDK for how long...
I had to remove the ignition switch a few years back because a piece of plastic wrap type material got pushed into the lock assy. by my key, so the key wouldn't go all the way in... Where the plastic came from is a mystery, but I didn't see it and jammed it into the lock. Anyway, I found the star bit I'd drilled so it would fit into the bolts securing the ignition switch assy. and removed it.
The small bolts securing the switch to the bottom of the assy. are (I think) controlled torque fasteners, which means the drive parts shear off when they are tight. I drilled off the heads, opened the switch, cleaned it out (it wasn't very dirty) lubed it with silicon dielectric compound and reassembled it with the contact block turned 180 degrees. All fixed for now. I even found some Phillips head bolts to re-secure the cover in my stash of hardware.
There weren't any mechanical problems as I first suspected.

I can't help myself, I'm frugal and I like to fix things, or at least try.
