View Full Version : Winter riding base layers
Hi everyone I'm wondering what to you lot wear underneath your biking gear to stay toasty in cold conditions? I have an aerostitch all in one suit but want a warm underlay er to wear with it? Are these vase layers that are around really good at keeping you warm. I'm commuting 30 miles each way mainly motorway?
UnderArmour ColdGear Compression base layers, toasty, comfortable and don't get sweaty. Really good stuff and doesn't cost the earth like some bike specific gear. Search on Amazon and there are bargains to be had.

you cant beat electric clothing. yes the initial outlay is expensive but in the long run its worth every penny. get too hot just turn it off.
if you dont want to spend a lot of money and your gear gas removable liners then you can DIY your own for not much money, if you go the DIY route then seam seal tape is your best friend.
Thanks everyone I'll look for an all in one base layer

Have a look in trade shops aimed at outdoor trades too. My Dickies branded base layers are from Screwfix or similar and are much cheaper than bike specific equivalents and just as good.
Excellent I'm all over thay

Aldi and Lidl have a sale of bike stuff each year and the base and mid layer stuff is pretty good.

Textile jacket and trousers over jeans and a sweatshirt. Got some good richa winter gloves, as long as my hands are toasty im ok.
The aerostitch outfit I have is fantastic it's just the under stuff. I got given the all in one outer and it's was 1300usd!

Probably not quite as cheap as some but pretty good try Wiggle. I have a couple of Craft base layers that I use all the time in winter. When used with my Lindstrand (budget Halvarsons) textile suit, its pretty much just my hands which got cold commuting in the winter.
Another one to consider is planet-x, again a push-bike shop, but they often have some pretty good merino baselayers for around 15 quid. Mine also has a panel of high wicking material on the back, which is nice, it means that I don;t get too sweaty under the back protector.

I have merino base layers then wear a cashmere sweater under my jacket which has a thermal lining, and I also wear a cashmere scarf and silk glove liners. Merino and cashmere seem to hold the warmth without getting sweaty. The merino layers came from Blacks in the sale.
I bought Matalan thermal underwear. Does the trick for me. When I worked, I commuted all the year round on the bike and these kept me toasty under my leather trousers and textile jacket.
