View Full Version : Had a go on a CBR600RR

Had a go on a friends CBR600RR at the weekend. A bit weird feeling - felt a lot more "on top of it" rather than "being part of the bike". That said, once I'd got used to it, I really did like the feel of it. Not sure I'd buy one but I'm a lot more open to it than I was.
Obviously a very different bike to the SV with a very different price point before anyone points out the obvious! :D

One of the things I like the most about the SV is the instant grunt and go, from any speed in pretty much any gear. How does the Honda compare?

IMPO comparing a IL4 to a V-Twin is like comparing chalk and cheese.

Twins & Singles are about torque, IL4 & V4s are about power and triples are a nice mix of both.

I have owned an SV650S, SV1000S and an R6, but, have also ridden a GSXR600, GSXR750, CBR600RR and a CB500, so, while no expert, a pretty good spread by there.

At the end of the day you buy the bike you want for how you wanna ride.

I have the SV1000S for when I wanna have a nice easy ride, but, can have fun if I want, but, I ride the R6 for the sheer thrill.

The R6 is useless below about 7k revs and can be a bit of a nightmare in slow traffic/around town, whereas the SV1000S can "run out of legs" if pushed hard.

Glad you enjoyed the experience Amadeus

I guess the thing I noticed was the power seemed to just keep coming! It was a track bike with a quickshifter, and frankly was waaay more than I was used to or expecting.

I do miss that 600 IL4 screaming top end every so often, its very addictive.

I suspect it means that I get rid of the SV. Don't dislike the SV but it's the only big bike I've had so could do with a change, even if I decide after some time to go back to an SV.

I made the switch from my pointy SV to a cbr600rr. I don't regret my decision even a little bit.

Since the very start (1990s!) the CBRs have had that "sitting on top" feeling I've always hated, interesting it's still there

I felt the same when I sat on a 2011 R1 and an older ZX6R and both of them felt like I was perched on top of them. My dad's ZX7R on the other hand felt amazing! Although the rear was too high and the front was too low for my liking, just because I had to look up so far that I got a neck cramp haha but I didn't have that problem on my old ZXR400

Maybe I'm just so used to the riding position that I don't notice, but I don't have a feeling of being perched on top particularly. It's definitely head down, **** up but once accustomed to the riding position I felt extremely integral to the bike.

Obviously being a supersport its not what you'd call comfy but honestly it's ok for 200-300 miles in a day. Mines a 2008.

You do just get used to a particular pose.
Took me ages to get into the tigers upright ,feet more forward position.

I've read reviews that have always complimented GSXRs on the way that you sit in them, rather than on them. Perhaps it's a Suzuki thing.

I wouldn't agree totally there.

GSXR's are like most sports bikes a*se up/head down with weight on the wrists.

In what I have experienced they are not as extreme as some and I found the CBR the more "comfortable."

My R6 is not the best, but, from those I have sat on it went (in order of comfyness) CBR > GSXR > ZXR > YZFR

Might not be the seating position, simply the geometry of the fairing and/or tank.

Can't agree or disagree unless someone wants to lend me a GSXR.

Someone?

Anyone?

depends on the years you ride IMO, newer bikes seem to be more of a "perch on top" position. The new R1 feels like you're sat on the tank.

I personally can't get along with newer sports bikes, I find them too small. I found the big bang R1 more comfortable than the normal version (prior 3cyl) and i very nearly bought one, but my wallet sprung shut like Arkwright's till

I could be persuaded to part with my RR if someone wants to form their own opinion of one 😉.

I'd gladly take it for a ride, purely for scientific purposes of course! ;)

You can take it for as many rides as you like! You can even keep it in your garage and have the logbook put in your name if you want?

...for the right price of course 😉 But seriously, I've been thinking lately about letting it go.

I would be tempted if I could afford it ;)

I rode a supersport for the first time since 2005 last month at Anglesey. I was amazed how much I felt perched on top of the 2007 ZX6R after riding my SV1000SZ for the last eight years. It was light, turned very well and I couldn’t believe how much they rev out. I only had a 15 min session and didn’t use tyre warmers so it took me a while to get going, but once I’d got the feel for it, I wanted to keep it. Here is a bit of video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRXGuYcZdIY) filmed from my mates GSXR750K5 if you are interested. We were in Fast Group so I’m getting a bit battered, but it was my first go on it and no warmers etc… excuses, excuses.

The CBR1000 had the "sitting down inside" feeling. Which was lucky as it was the size of a respectable holiday cottage.

Try something other than a sports bike, like a street triple. Clip ons were designed for racing. On the road wider bars give you an agillity and handling which is very enjoyable. You may be surprised just how much you like it.
