Apologies in advance for the newbie questions that I'm sure have been covered previously. I've got my A2 license and I'm looking at buying an SV as my first bike, in particular I've got my eye on a reasonably priced 2002 SV650S. I had been hoping to restrict it with a 33 bhp ecu but it looks like that's only an option for the 2003 onwards models?

Are my ebaying skills just rusty or would I have to seek out an alternative method of restriction? I was hoping for something relatively cheap that I could fit myself without much bother (especially since I might have to fit it at the sellers house to ride it home). Are the restrictor washers straight forward to install/remove?

The washers just sit between the carbs and the inlets, so you just have to lift the tank, take the airbox off, unscrew the carbs from the diaphragm then pop the washers in.
The other important part is a restriction certificate (some insurers will ask for proof of the restriction) which may have to be stamped by a garage, I have heard otherwise though

Restriction certificates are a gimmick, there is no legal requirement for such a thing.

They were invented by the restrictor suppliers simply to try and stop the resale of used restrictors.

It would appear though that the onus is upon the owner to be able to prove the bike is restricted. However, there is no legally defined method of proving this. A dyno run would indicate restrictors are fitted. But you would need an evidential dyno, capable of taking a flywheel drive (not rear wheel) and probably the type approval test methodology to prove/disprove that an engine exceeds a certain power output.

So ignore my above. Fit restrictor washers and get a dyno run done. Laminate a copy of the report and shove it under your seat. Most cops are ignorant of the law and the dyno report should keep them happy.

Why are you restricting to 33BHP? surely it should be 46.6BHP?

I was saying that because a friend of mine had to provide her insurance company with a certificate.

Whether it's 33 or 46.6 depends on when you passed your test, but if it's classed as an A2 license it should be 46.6

As far as I'm aware Suzuki only make a 33bhp restricted ecu. I was hoping to restrict it with an ecu for convenience sake, but it looks like that's not an option, so I'll probably restrict it to 46.6bhp with the washers.

Is that a relatively quick, idiot-proof process? My main concern is getting the bike back from the seller's house, if I can't fit the washers there on my own then I'd have to ride it back home unrestricted.

With regards to the dyno testing, my understanding was that the onus was on the police or insurance company to prove that the bike isn't restricted by testing it themselves and that they're unlikely to take my word (or piece of paper) as proof.

You buy them off kickstarter on ebay, they are fifty quid. they arrive two days later (about the size of your palm)
Take them to the sellers house, take off two screws (Tank) lift the tank, pull off the airbox and then the carbs, drop the washers into both carb inlets, pop the airbox and carbs back on and drive away.

Or dont bother, im 2 years 4 months in on my A2 restriction, never been pulled or anything like that, mines got a throttle restrictor fitted, just need to do my test and get it off. (I had a curvy before the pointy and fitted the washers myself)
