I bought a set of RST Tractech leathers end of July. Between then and now I've worn them maybe a handful of times. I've been caught out in the rain once but promptly wiped them down and left them to dry naturally.

Last month I've noticed they were starting to bubble and crack so got them sent off to RST which have just informed me they are water damaged and will continue to deteriorate and eventually fall apart and they no longer want anything to do with it.

These cost me over £400 a few months ago and they're basically telling me that because they got wet once, they're ruined? I've had a few budget sets of leathers in the past, worn in all weathers and they are holding up fine after years of use. These didn't last 2 months.

Do I just have to suck it up and accept I've wasted £400 or is there something I can do?

Thanks and sorry for the rant. I'm a little p***** off as you can imagine.

so how have cows and kangeroos managed all these years when it rains, they dont seem to fall apart ,citizens advice is your best bet as i think rst is trying to fob you off,was there a label on them saying dont ride in the rain or get them wet :D

I'd also like to add one of my mates was out with me when we got caught out in the rain and he was wearing his 2014 RST Tractech leathers and his are holding up just fine?

Bought end of July 2015? I would say that they are not fit for purpose, unless they have a label in them stating they must not under any circumstances be worn in the rain/got wet.

Yep. Just before 20th July.

They offered me some leather cleaner as what I'm assuming is a "goodwill gesture". What good is that? They weren't dirty to begin with and a ~£10 bottle of cleaner isn't going to make up for the cost of the leathers.

Did you pay with a credit card, then you may have some recourse with your credit card company

I may give them a call if RST refuse to help. I won't accept that one outing in the rain has ruined them and that it's my fault. Especially when my mate is wearing the same gear, on the same ride, and his is fine.

The issue is not between you and RST, it's between you and the retailer.

Would a reasonable person person, unless specifically and clearly instructed otherwise, think it reasonable that they might get caught in the rain once? For a £400 set of leathers is 14 months a reasonable amount of time for them to last? ( or put another way, is it unreasonable to expect them to last less than this?)

I would hit the retailer in writing with this while also commending them for following this up with the manufacturer (which is actually only a distraction)

I went straight to RST as when I first saw the markings on the leather I had no idea what could have caused them. They asked me to drop them off at the retailer I bought them from so they could be collected for inspection.

I will contact the retailer and see what they say before taking it any further with RST.

I had only owned the leathers for less than 2 months before I noticed the markings.

Thanks.

Go to retailer and quote slae of goods act and that they are not fit for purpose. To expect bike leathers worn outside not to get wet is ridiculous. Your contract is with the retailer and not RST, they will have to fight RST not you. If the refuse go to Citizens Advice and then Trading Standars. Tell the shop what is going to happen.

I once stood in a shop for 3 hours, right in front of the till, until they gave me a replacement item. Be a pain in the **** and tell them your not leaving and you are going to tell everyone coming into the shop why you are there. They will threaten police, tell them you will call the local paper the minute they come off the phone to the police. It works, I promise you.

Explained to RST that everything I done is exactly as anyone else would have done.

Long story short. Getting new replacements as a gesture of goodwill.

They did mentioned that the leathers were chemically damaged due to the Autoglym Leather Care Balm I had used on them once. But the bottle specifically states that it is suitable for motorcycle leathers. Anyone else used this before on their leathers?

Can't comment for the autoglym stuff but I use urad. It's brilliant as a cleaner and separate water proofing.
You can get it from good equine shops (if it protects horse riders equipment its good for me). Never had a problem with it and it extended the life of my old leather jacket by years

RST are sending me some Motul stuff. Once that runs out I'll have a look at the Urad stuff :)

Thanks
