Can I stick my sv in the back of my van and turn up at the test centre and drop it out and just do the test ?

I'm trying to do it as cheap as possible ya see.
I feel like my training company are extracting loads of money and the cost is mounting up ! It's £15 a pop to do mod one, so if i do it a couple of times or whatever it's still cheaper than the cost of riding up there with my instructor on a hire bike etc.

I know I've got the mod 1 nailed, my road riding is perfect. The cost is just frustrating

As far iam awere you can use your own vehicle as long its restricted, mot'ed and insured. Call t dvla for more info.

Mod1 it wont matter too much.
They do make you sign a declaration that you have valid insurance etc. Technically, you should have.

It is not very easy to get insurance if you have not passed your test unless it's a 125. There is also a weight to KW ratio that you need to check. I assume that you are doing the category A test that means:

be at least 595cc
be at least 40kW engine power categories A
can’t have a power to weight ratio of more than 0.16kW/kg

Now that applies to the module 2 and I would assume that the same applies to Mod 1. Are you taking any lessons to do the Module 1? The school should be able to advise, but I know on other sites instructors have said that you need the same power bike and the power to weight issue has been a bit of a arbitrary point to using the SV650 though I have never seen anything definitive.

I wouldnt use the SV for MOD 1, I think its a bit lumpy and difficult for the U turn etc. I dont know for sure but It doesnt feel like a good idea.

I have been thinking about using mine to re-do my test to get rid of the restriction. its a pain in the ar*e

I can't speak about the 2nd generation SV650 but I have the S version and certainly some of what you need to do with Mod 1 would be difficult on that if not impossible.

I think you need insurance in case you damage the surface of the test area. Throttle body balance, tps adjust, clutch adjusted as per manual, the sv would be ok but the lesser lock on the S may well make the U turn an interestimg one. Also the position of the S with more weight on the bars will make the slow manouevers harder.

Thanks for all your knowledgeable advice lads

I've decided to continue with training with another bike school who are almost half the cost of the first school

Like you say an upright naked bike is going to be a better bet for mod 1

That's the right decision. I don't think I could redo the mod 1 on the SV. Good luck with the test.

Im in the same sitatuon here! Ive gotts re-do my MOD1 & MOD2 soon in order to be able to ride unrestricted! (Bunch of Bo!!ocks if you ask me!) and i went out on my SV650s to practice things like the U-Turn today. Found it to be extremely hard what with the clip ons and restricted lock that the bike offers! Looks like i'll be forking out yet more money to ride a training school bike again! :@

Yeah Vik, im in the same boat, I could do my unrestricted test as of July this year, but im yet to have found the funds to be borrowing the school's bikes etc :(

Oh man that's tough! I think it's such a stupid law that we have to retake module 1 aswell as module 2. It should just be module 2 if anything! That way people could use the bike they're currently used to and wouldn't have to fork out expense on training schools. Again another money making ploy by the dvla/dvsa in my opinion!!

There would be nothing stopping you doing the following, if you felt you were at a standard to pass, if you're upgrading from the A2 license to the A license.
Remove the restrictions from your bike (or not...its impossible for a test center to check if there is a restriction in place)
Get a fully licensed friend with cover to ride it to the test center, with you as pillion.
Fit L plates.
Do Mod1 or Mod2.

Note - Your insurance covers you to ride your motorcycle under certain circumstances. Mod 1 there should be no quibbling as you're not on the road.
I'd speak to your insurance company and ask if you would be covered under test conditions. Or if they would extend cover for a day to cover you for this eventuality.

If you are....You could use your own bike. The benefit with having a qualified tutor is he/she should pick you up on all the small mistakes you make that would cost you minor points and potentially squeeze a pass.

Trouble is still the bike itself. The sv650 in its sport trim is quite a hard bike to maneuver for the tighter turns like the u-turn and figure of 8. I tried it yesterday on a road roughly 7 metres wide and the clip ons made it difficult as my wrist kept hitting the tank on full right hand lock....
