View Full Version : Waterproofing leather trousers
Hi,
I have a pair of skintan leather trousers, these are in very good nick, but are getting on a bit, they are now about as water resistant as a tea bag, and as I commute on my bike and it is now firmly in the rainy season in deepest kernow, I am wondering if anyone can recomend a treatment I can use on them to seal then up a bit.
Any advice appreciated
Cheers

You can put leather care stuff on them which makes them water resistant to some extent but leather isnt waterproof. You really need a waterproof oversuit.Nothinf else will keep out proper rain.

I've used Nikwax leather waterproofer and it was good for about 30 mins of rain or 10 mins of heavy rain but it made the leathers really slippery on the seat for about two weeks. I've also used Renapur leather conditioner that adds water resistance but with leathers I've found overtrousers to be best. At this time of year I'm in my Goretex textiles which I've found completely waterproof over the last two years, and if you are commuting through the winter some waterproof textiles might be worth investing in. However an oversuit is also good for these as it means your textiles are dry when you put them on after work so you don't have to ride home in wet/damp bike gear.
Go to screwfix and get a cheap pair of over trousers.
Thanks for the help guys, I have to say I feared as much!
Plastic pants it is then lol
