I am under orders to reduce my loft space consumption.

Amazing, I have just finally decided to get rid of my notes from when I was at Leyland Motors technical college in the 70s.

Looking back at them. It is amazing how much I have forgotten. Ackerman steering, Epicyclic gearbox design etc. But all the other notes

Calculus. I don't thing I have done any since 82 when I decided to leave mechanical engineering. Thermodynamics and fluids. OK I guess that enabled me to talk to the turbine chaps at work. mechanical engineering. God why did I ever struggle?

I now feel after throwing out about 20 lever arch files that I have thrown out all I ever was. But why keep it in the first place. It was all so out of date!

so loft clear. She better keep out of my garage

Loft Clear... thats new space for important stuff that you might use in the future... you never know when these things might be needed... :-D

When we last moved house back in 2002 I fished down from the loft all the boxes I had put up there seven years previously when we'd moved in. Realising it was a waste of time putting them in the new loft most of it was binned and I vowed only to keep the empty suitcases and the Christmas tree (plastic) up in the current loft. So far it's gone reasonably well, although the odd few things have crept up there it's mostly empty space. Good job as it's a sod to get into due to very badly positioned water tanks.

The spare room wardrobes however are absolutely ram packed with stuff Lady Poppy says we absolutely must keep... She's more of a hoarder than me.

My parents made me clear my stuff out of their loft recently.

Corgi cars (in boxes) football card collection ( from the year before I was born - I think my brothers have stitched me up) etc.
I also seem to have an Amstrad PCW8256 and a Brother word processor. I also threw out all my University notes on the synthesis of polyyne chains as I suspect I have no further use for them after 20+ years.

Junk is something you keep for 20 years, and throw it away 2 weeks before you need it,and yes I am a hoarder of the worse kind.I had a burglar alarm fitted some years ago and the lad that had to route the cables through the loft said he found 2 Jap snipers up there from the war behind some boxes!!!

Unlike many women I horde very little especially in the way of clothing, I work on a one in one out system, I only have so many hangers in my wardrobe so if I buy something new something old has to go to the recycle bin. DJ however is a terrible horder and I am hoping that we win the free skip in the boys school raffle so that we can clear out the loft.

If I haven't worn something for a year or more it generally goes to the charity shop. The exception is my evening gowns as they are fairly timeless. I do seem to have drawers full of chargers for things I've long since replaced and next time we get a wet weekend I shall address this. Novels I bin after I've read them, cookery books I never chuck. I do try not to let junk build up but still have more clutter than I'd like.

I try to live by the ' Is it useful, is it beautiful' rule. If it's neither, get rid of it.

Given that I have over 30 years issues each of three science fiction magazines, I guess you could say I am a hoarder.

No! *
Although I do have Motor Sport and Motorcycle Sport mags going back to the mid 60s!
* Mrs puny says otherwise for some obscure reason.
Lph has the answer for that: "I try to live by the ' Is it useful, is it beautiful' rule. If it's neither, get rid of it."

Yes - I probably fit the definition of a hoarder, because I am loathe to just throw things away.

I think there is very little that I have that is true waste. However it's also true to say that I won't use a lot of it for a long time either, so the challenge is distinguishing between the two.

... Hmmm, I think it's probably time to get rid of my uni notes, too! There's been a lot of development in electrical engineering over the last 20 years and, whilst the first principles remain valid, if I did need to hunt down a reference, it'd probably be quicker to google* than to hunt through those boxes.

* Other search engines are available.;)

Not as bad as I used to be, and not as bad as my father was.
Tired of the junk though and trying to reform.
Slowly throwing it all away but not really been in a hurry.
Not accumulating any more is the main thing.

Just started attempting to sort through my rented storage facility which is all the stuff I brought down from my garage up north, which is all the stuff I had in my house that I shoved in the garage when I moved... I have a garage as well, 2 sheds and a house that's full of erm... useful things...

The storage is costing me about the same as a new bike loan so it's time for it to go! :rambo:

I've an awful lot of motorcycle parts in my loft from full fairings to exhausts.

I'm thinking of leaving the wrapped up tailors dummy up there when we finally move. Give em a fright when they turn on the light!

Ay, ay. ay! I find myself saying that a lot!

Terrible habit of fossicking too. Nuts, bolts, fasteners, bits of cable... recycling cable ties.

Useful sized boxes, tools left by Ford mechanics in my engine bay! Hopeless case!

Definitely not a hoarder, although the wife has been around a while. I tend to move stuff on pretty quickly, either sell or the tip, if its no longer wanted.

I am like that, I chuck it out and she says.."OOOh can I use that for the farm!" of course it never gets near the farm but WOE betide me if I leave my crash helmet out.

I even spent a week scanning all my old photos and then binning the old albums.

Not a hoarder... If it is stuffed and beyond repair it goes to the tip. If it still has good life left in it or is still worth something... well, I've got a couple of sheds full of old gear that is free to a good home.

Ah, but have you ever thrown away a wire coat hanger? That would HAVE to disqualify you as a hoarder, because we all know how useful having 26 of them in various states of corrosion is acceptable.

We men hoard clothing to have something to wear when we inevitably get cornered and have to do the house DIY that we've been procrastinating about for the last 4 years. We then need to keep them to prove that we have actually done something useful "recently" for the next 4 years... and please remember that we don't need reminding every 6 months to get it done! Oh, and a professional will cost WAY too much so wait until we have a moment... 2020's looking good!!
