HI all.
Passed my test last month and bought myself an early Christmas present. 1999 Blue Sv650s. Lovely bike, rather loud and seems to like popping flames at the moment..
It's un daily use for my commute in and out of Cardiff at the moment, so I'll need advice to take proper car of the old girl. ☺
I was originally looking for a fazer for commuting but couldn't resist this when I saw it. Very pleased so far only just noticed a little oil leak so there's something to look into. Lol
I'll add some pictures later.

If you need any advice on caring for your SV don't be afraid to ask on here, everyone is pretty knowledgeable, but, there are some dodgy people too (you know who you are XD)
Hopefully when the summer comes you'll get to enjoy the lovely Welsh roads we have.

Cheers guys.
First on my list is some new gear. Yesterday's trip down the M4 left me sodden through and having to put wet kit back on for wirk as 4am this morning wasn't pleasant. lol
I have been driving cars round Wales for year (always taking the scenic route...), as we have some beautiful roads on the doorstep and I am looking forward to better weather to ride them on the SV.
I dare say I will have plenty of technical questions over time (like why is it shooting flames. lol) as I am very new to bikes but never afraid to get the spanners out. :)

Not too shabby, the flames are because it is a carb bike and in the over run the unburnt fuel won't be ignited as there isn't enough air in the engine due to closed butterflies and it ignites in the exhaust. I think so anyway.
If you want any local help with mechanical stuff I am willing to offer my assistance.
Stay safe

Thanks for the explanation and the offer. I'll wait till it starts getting warmer before I start tinkering and get mechanical.

welcome to the site :) x
welcome to the site, my first recommendation would be to get a fender extender on that front mudguard, you can pick them up on ebay for not too much.
That will keep water off the front plug in the wet.
I make a daily commute out of Cardiff myself to Newport but if your ever looking for a ride out let me know.

Hoping to get the fender extender next week, looking for a carbon fibre one as black plastic might fade?
Just replace both plugs as I've had a few soggy plug moments and Monday killed it completely. Got it home but only on one cylinder, and stayed like that the following day. Seems to be better now. One rusty plug and one black plug out.

Soak them in ACF50 once you've fitted them to the bike, will help to keep some of the water away.
One thing you could do is to fashion a temporary extender using a takeaway tub lid and some duct tape, wont look pretty but will work for a short term.
Where about do you commute from exactly?

That's good idea with a make shift one. Might look at it over the weekend.
What part should I cover in acf50? Spray it over the plug cap with it all back together?
Usual commute is Ystrad Mynach to Cardiff. Sometimes the return trip takes me to blackwood.

Used to do a similar run myself, riding from Llanbradach to Cardiff, family still live in the 'Brad, but, I have moved to nearer Newport now, but, still work in Cardiff.
Take it easy on the A470, few people on that road look for bikers.
I would put the ACF50 on the top of the plug, but, wipe down the connector at the top so there is a good connection with the HT lead.

It doesn't look pretty but I took your advice a made a temporary extender out of a 2ltr coke bottle and some gaffer tape. Let's hope it last till I can get a proper one.

But, if you want that carbon look then you'll have to wait
