View Full Version : OMO Fibre broadband slow to load webpages
I've got Fibre to the premises from Plusnet and getting a download speed from speedtest.net of arounf 70Mbps. I can stream HD netflix, Iplayer etc with zero buffering. I can also download things quickly.
Normal browsing however is a nightmare, the pages take up to two minutes to load and sometimes never load at all.
There were no issues untill last week, I've tried IE, Chrome and Edge, all the same. Tried dekstop (hardwired) and laptop (wifi), same issue. Both run Windows 10.
Any ideas before I get fobbed off by the plusnet support?
Cheers
depends on who is hosting the website, could be that their servers are a bit busy and if its UK servers it could be due to the weather playing havoc with their connection.
give it a few hours and see what happens.
if you linked the websites we could try them to see if its your connection or the sites not returning properly.
It's pretty much any website.
Weirdest thing is something like Youtube. It will take ages to load the page and half of the thumbnails wont load at all. But as soon as you click a video it streams in 1080p without a hitch.

Sounds like a virus maybe
have you updated anything recently like Java?
doubt its a virus if both laptop and desktop are affected.
have you tried re-booting your router?
have you logged onto your router to check who is connected? you never know you might just be sharing your connection without knowing.
has this only started since you got fibre installed?

Got an Xbox connected to it?
Yes got a xbox. Fibre has been fine for months. Only started last couple of weeks. Upgraded the desktop to win 10 about the same time but laptop has been on 10 for ages.

uk pipes always go flakey at this time of year and high summer. stop and think about the amount of traffic on the internet these days is like the amount of cars on the road in the 1960's compared to now and you get the idea, while ISP's are updating their servers everyone is forgetting about the pipelines as its 'not their problem'. now add in bad weather and you get what you get on the roads.. congestion due to flooding etc.etc
I understand how traffic can slow down the connection. What confused me was light use (browsing) was affected but heavy use (streaming, downloading) was fine.
I checked my usage this month however and it was nearly 1100Gb, so maybe some throttling was introduced!
That'll teach me not to leave skyplayer running in the background all the time.
you would see a difference in download speeds rather than surfing speeds if your isp was throttling. remember even though the site says .co.uk it does not mean that the server is in the uk.
it still amazes me that the internet is even working with the amount of traffic on it so no wonder it gets a bit flakey now and again.

I had a similar issue on Plusnet. Put it down to slow DNS responses, and some quirky behaviour on the router.
A trawl of the forums suggested other people had seen issues with PlusNet DNS servers. I switched my router over to use OpenDNS instead. (https://www.opendns.com/)
