Came off my SV yesterday.. a van changed lane in front of me approaching a set of lights, pulled the brake bike went down and it slid along on its crash bungs which did a great job and minimised damage but the rear wheel hit a kerb & has a big dent in it, chain too plus the usual foot peg, lever, scuff on the nose cone, tail plastic etc

Are the insurance likely to write this off?

Its a K3, great pre-accident condition, full fairings, akrapovic system etc & 21k miles - I could fix it myself for a couple of hundred quid but my insurance company have arranged for a hire bike to be dropped off whilst mines taken away for assesment/repairs.

Ideally if its written off I'd like to buy it back and get it back on the road.

It's a shame you have involved your insurance company then. Fixing it yourself for £200 is going to be considerably cheaper than the subsequent hike in your premium, even if you manage to get all the claim transferred to the van.......

With the damage you describe I'd be very surprised if they don't write it off and there is no way they are going to give you enough to replace it like for like.

Do you still have it?

Yep still have the bike at home, being collected Friday morning.

Not sure how these things work & I use the bike for work so need a bike everyday - getting the train is a big inconienience so I thought going through the insurance was for the best especially as most of my clothing and Go Pro got damaged in the process plus there always seems to be more than meets eye from fixing what you assume to be, not much damage.

Guess I'll have to suck it & see then... If I can buy it back I'll be happy but not sure on how these things work.

Will also be given a courtesy bike when they collect mine to be assesed which helps me out a lot.

I guess that's what we have insurance for. Did the van driver stop?

yep he did, he held his hands up and said it was all his fault etc so got liability etc all on the Go Pro footage but still really annoying

Hope you are ok.
Are you fully comp? If not don't let them take it. Even if the guy at the scene admitted it. They sometimes change their mind. Lesson I just learnt. Just read about the go pro footage - hopefully that will help you no end. From the damage you state, yes they'll right it off. I had a bent foot peg and a quote for £1100.00.

Good Luck.

Yeah Im fine really, arms and legs a bit achey today but nothing permanent.

I am fully comp - i did say when I called my insurance that my local bike shop were recovering it for me & they could repair it for me but in order to get the loan bike etc, it had to go with their recommened company called 'Plantec' which I struggle to find any positive reviews about ha ha

I'll make it clear then that I want to buy the bike back, if econaomical to do so & I'll fix it myself or strip it, buy another one & fit my good parts.

Thanks for the replies.

Ahh Plantec - Horrendous company.

They "Dealt" with my bike and gave me 6 hire bikes in the space of 3 months, why so many? because they were all sheds... No1 - Clutch slipped so bad I couldn't accelerate, No2 - slow puncture, No3 - Crap clutch... the list goes on.

They scratched my bike and left it somewhere extra dusty, so when I got it back it looked like a wreck (Only crash damage was a snapped rear mudguard)

They dodge calls, fob you off, and generally take the p1ss. But in the end I got £650 for the value of the bike (cat D), bought mine back for £50 salvage, spent £50 fixing it and then sold it for £700.

All in all, your best just being patient, they will eventually ring you to tell you the inevitable (Its a write off) Then they will give you your options, good luck with it all mate, glad your not to banged up!

Thanks mate - every review has been that their useless ha ha

I dont mind aslong as I eventually get the bike back and have use of the hire bike whilst its with them - got a few mates that have offered me use of bikes but dont want to potentially write off a mates bike ha

Did you have to state that you wanted the bike back before they took or were you given the option when they called to say it was a write off?

Afterwards matey, They ring you up, tell you what the Engineer's report was, and then tell you, you can either A: Buy it back for a salvage price they will set, or B: They pay you what they think it is worth and "Dispose" of the bike (Probably re-sell it haha)

Once I told them I wanted it back they sent it round in a van the next day, cant complain with that, its just that they really take their time getting the engineer's report done thats all.

Ah thats fine then, Im happy with that aslong as it comes back in the condition it leaves me in & I'll fix it up myself, I can handle dust & dirt but if my Akrapovic system gets damaged there will be trouble ha ha

Funny that a few days ago i was thinking of getting a different bike and I've only been without this 1 for a day & already really miss it.

Take photos of it before it goes mate, then you will have evidence if they do any damage.

They lost my Reg Plate, but when I rang they said the cost is factored into my offer so buy a new one. (Not the point as it would have been less hassle to just put it back on but hey ho!)

I miss mine when I dont go anywhere on the weekend, I have ridden it everyday pretty much since I got it, so I know where you are coming from!

If you have a claim against the other driver get on to White Dalton and get them to handle it.Id do that first thing in the morning, and then listen hard and take their advice. They know what they are doing.

Thanks - I'll contact them this morning.

Am I free to use who I like as far as the legal side of things go? I take this is completely seperate from the bike repair/courtesy bike scenario.

Cheers

Yes, your insurance company may try using their own solicitors, but as the others have said use White Dalton.

Spoken to White Dalton & they recommended that I speak with the 3rd party's insurer direct and give them the option of providing me with a hire bike whilst my bike is off the road & to steer clear of Plantec if possible as all charges for the hire bike & storage of my bike will be in my name. Also, I have fully comp insurance I have the right to get my bike repaired by who I choose, it doesnt have to be taken away to be assesed.

3rd party's Insurer has said that they need to speak to their client & aslong as he admits liability they'll provide me with a bike and we'll go from there.

White Dalton said as my injurys are fairly minor & 3rd party admits liability, I probably wont need a solicitor but if they refuse me a bike etc or the driver changes his mind I can then instruct them to act for me.

Good bunch White Dalton. Andrew Dalton is ex army and the whole crew are motorcyclists themselves. They also happen to be very good at what they do.
