Thought it was about time i started a build thread since its now fairly different to when i first bought it!

I’ve had my 99 SV650 (first bike) since October and absolutely love the vtwin power but was never a fan of the looks. So... firstly, i got rid of that horrible half fairing (apologies if you’re a fan but i am not!).

Then next was deciding what to do about the tail. I originally bought all the parts to do a diy tail tidy and make my own seat cowl (which i did), but after seeing a few SV’s with the Ducati Monster seat i decided that was the way to go :)

So i sourced a monster 696 seat and cowl off the bay and went to work on building a sub-frame and undertail to suit. I won’t go into much detail, il let the photos show the work. I made the undertray from sheet aluminium and then wrapped it with 3m carbon fibre effect vinyl. Was gonna paint it black but as i had some vinyl left from wrapping the seat cowl (which il never use again!) i thought it cant hurt to try it, came out pretty good. I also sourced the led tail light, indicators and number plate lights off ebay too.

I had to make some brackets to hold the tank down, which i then used to hook the front of the seat in to. Worked out nicely. And i used the original SV pillion latch/mech to lock the rear of the seat to the sub-frame.

Anyway, after spraying the sub-frame, bolting it on and fixing the cdi, r/r, fuses etc into place, its pretty much finished minus some fresh paint on the cowl.

Oh, i also swapped out the MASSIVE silencer for a “slightly” smaller gp cone! I made a baffle myself and wrapped what i could with Acoustafil, which made a substantial difference and definitely needed! I did start the bike up once without a baffle... unbearable! But now it sounds lovely.

Now, here’s a bunch of photos! :)

Next to do Is the fork swap. Ive already sourced an SRAD 750 front end so that’ll be going on within the next couple of weeks. Then its time for paint.

Let me know what ya think. All comments and suggestions welcome :)

Thanks all :) I used a universal 7" off ebay. I was a little dubious but the quality and output is better than expected.

The fork swap is happening this coming weekend, photos will follow.

I managed to get a quick ride out yesterday for the first time since i'd finished the naked and tail conversion, and with the new exhaust/baffle... super happy with it. Tail felt solid and the exhaust sounds awesome! I am fully in love with my bike right now :P ha!

Good effort!

Although I can't help but think that seat angle is quite harsh! Looks like a steep angle down in to a tight squeeze of you get my meaning lol

Can't wait to see the shiny front end!!

Right, been having a think about paint today. I'd like to keep it blue but a darker shade than standard, perhaps with a white stripe. Something like this, maybe...

I really love the look of the tail angle but I agree, is a bit steep as far as my junk is concerned!! Although, to be honest, I only really felt the squeeze when stationary with my feet down. Once they were up on the pegs, head down and rolling it was no longer an issue :D

UPDATE...

Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to fit the new front end this weekend. My step farth mocked up the front end (as I'm keeping the parts at his workshop) to find one of the forks were damaged so had to source a replacement. Managed to do so but won't arrive till Tuesday so it's put back to next weekend. So instead I decided to tackle my current lack of clocks!

I've been trying to decide what to do, and as funds are a little low at the mo il be using my phone as a gps speedo until I can decide and afford a more permanent solution.

So, I made a mounting plate and a cover to slide on over the phone for abit of protection from the elements. And I've also added led warning lights to replace the ones I've lost from the original cluster, just gotta work out how to wire them in from the original loom. The only thing I won't have is RPM but that doesn't bother me too much.

This is what I've made, seems to hold up well and the gps speedo app I'm using works well too :)

I decided today was the day to take the bike for its first ride into work. 7am this morning, looked out the window, all was dry and bright. Weather forecast said dry all day. Got kitted up, set off, got 5 minutes down the road... Hammered it down!!!!! Damn it! Was desperately trying to avoid a wet ride until i got a rear hugger for it.

On the plus side, my phone (somehow!) remained completely dry :P

So far so good :) No issues with sunlight. I have the phone brightness maxed out. But i guess you could make some kind of small visor for it to shield the screen if you had to.

SRAD forks are going on tomorrow morning. Id like to mention that my step farth, Chris Tombleson (some of you may know as owner of "Grumpy 1260 Performance Spares" and previously "Straightline Racing + The Two Wheel Centre") has provided me with all the parts for the front end swap as well as the bike itself. So huge thanks to him.

Il be using his workshop (and his expertise) to fit the front end. Hopefully il get some photos on here by tomorrow evening providing all goes smoothly! Im hoping it does, im potentially having a ride out to Cadwell on sunday :)

That's bloomin handy. Front end swap is relatively easy, I've done 2, although all the hard work had been done for me, speedo sensor, lock stops etc etc.

When I did the last one on my curvy, I used the special top bearing (TWF) and to take the headstock bearing cup out easier in the future, I cut a slot/groove where the race sits.

But ive decided to ditch the phone gps speedo idea (as well as it works) and ive gone ahead and purchased a KOSO DL-03SR Multifunction Gauge with the gps speedo sensor. So that'll be fitted as soon as it arrives :)

Nah im happy with the swing arm as it is. I mean, its not the best looking swing arm but i also dont think any other swing arms would suit it. Ive seen a few conversions whilst googling and i just dont think any of them looks right. Especially single sided.. not a fan!

+1 looking good and thats a cracking workshop you've got to play in.

Yeah, the old mans got a banging setup. Certainly made the front swap easy.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys :)

Next i wanna try mount my headlight abit closer to the forks. Im thinking a tracker style aluminium plate mounted flush to the forks and then chopping the headlight casing to the correct angle and mounting that to the plate.. If that makes sense?!

This kinda thing (excuse my dodgy mspaint photoshopping!)...

Im hoping to be able to mount it in the back of the headlight casing if there's gonna be enough left after i've butchered it to move it further between the fork legs! We shall see!! If not, il be making a bracket to mount it as flush with the level of the top yoke as poss.

Nice to know. I was hoping, as the bike has now improved handling and braking up front and the lack of fairing "potentially" slowing me down, that the insurance quote would reflect that. But i know things don't usually work out that way.

It's not so much that the premium increased it's just that the cheaper companies wont touch modified bikes.

This weekend i took on the task of mounting my headlight closer to the forks, which required alot of chopping and drilling! And also managed to mount and partially wire in my new KOSO gauge (speedo, indicator and high beams working so far). Id have liked to mount the gauge fully into the headlight casing but theres nowhere near enough room. Although i dont think it looks to bad as it is.

I had a koso DB-01 gauge on the pointy but gave up on figuring out the fuel gauge indication. You won't be able to use the fuel gauge as such due to the sensor in the tank being ON/OFF, so you'll just have the low level warning if that gauge is similar.

The sensor on the pointy fuel tank changes resistance depending on fuel level, again I can't remember the exact ohms for full and empty.

This weekend the tank, seat cowl and mud guard got removed and dropped off to the sprayer for painting :) Should hopefully have them back in a week.

Just need to order some white vinyl for the stripes. Unsure whether to go for a matt or gloss finish. I think the gloss will be easier to keep clean but the matt might look good against the gloss blue finish. Hmmm

Are you thinking of adding a belly pan?

Not sure if it's improve it or not.

I thought about a belly pan once but i've never come across one that looks good on the sv (personal opinion), they all seem too pointy near the wheel.

I see what you're saying, the exhaust doesn't look great but i still think it looks better that a belly pan!

I prefer the look of a bash plate. Id make it more for aesthetics than function, to hide the exhaust and cover the gap between the exhaust and engine. Try to achieve a better shape to the front of the engine.

A kind of bash plate/belly pan hybrid i guess!!

It is an improvment but I think itll look too tall, if you bring the bit nearest to the wheel up away from the floor a bit, it might help - rather than it being straight at the bottom it would snake upwards.

Might look worse tbh, just a thought

I'm not sure how it will really look until i actually mock something up.

Small update...

I realise I've not been on here a great deal lately, probably because i've been out enjoying my bike :)

Anyway, i decided i needed to get some srad750 bars to match the rest of my front end. I've been running some other 50mm bars that work fine but are only fixed on by clamping to the fork legs, whereas the srad750 bars locate and fix to the top yoke too. They were a bit of hassle to fit, mainly because i had 2 snapped bolts... one of the bars ends and one of the locator holes on the underside of the yoke. So after some drilling and tapping they were on and secure :)

I've also gone ahead and fitted the R6 throttle tube and grips. I was curious as to how much difference the 'mod' would actually make and for the sake of 20 quid i thought id give it a go.

In my opinion, a huge difference. Well to me anyway! Maybe it just suits my riding style. Im finding it 10x easier pulling away, and getting the power down is a dream :)

Did you have space to fit a better shock, like an 05 ZX6 shock?

It would look brilliant with a GSXR rear wheel conversion.

Thanks. Im a design engineer so id like to think ive got a good eye for things. I designed and cut all the subframe to have it welded by a friend at work.

Id like to fit the zx6r shock but unfortunately i didnt take it into account when i made the subframe. It looks as if it might fit but the reservoir will either be extremely close or colliding with the metal work. I really need to get hold of a shock to offer it up.

I do find the stock rear shock to do a perfectly good job as it is though. I've lost a lot of weight from the rear end, the stock subframe, plastics etc weighed a ton, perhaps this has helped take some strain away from the shock. I dunno!

Im not so sure about the gsxr wheel conversion. I mean, the wider rear wheel does look cool but i wouldnt want to sacrifice handling. Its so much fun to ride as it stands :)

i like the look of this belly pan / smash plate :D

have you had any luck with it yet ?

I mocked up something in cardboard but wasn't overly sold by it!

Like Maviczap suggested, il just polish the exhaust, make it look abit prettier i think :)

I'm liking your work there. Very blood runners (showing my age).

Small update...

Decided the chrome around the headlight had to go so went about painting it myself. Rather pleased with myself, turned out pretty good! Might try get hold of some rad end plates and colour match those too, could look good.

Not much of an update...

Went out locally to attempt to get better photos of the bike. They aren't too bad. Good locations nearby are hard to come by, really need to travel a little further, perhaps hit the coast road and see what i can find.

I'm currently on the hunt for a bandit 1200 rear wheel to run the 180 tyre. I'm told that there's a sprocket carrier from another wheel (the old man knows which!) that fits, which is already a reduced depth so little machining is required. Then its just making some axle adapters/spacers, and acquiring a new sprocket.

This will be happening as soon as the weather starts to turn! Can't be having the bike off the road whilst the weathers so nice at the mo :)

Looking great, really nice colour and subtle mods.

Why do you need another rear wheel? I'd say get some good tyres on that bad boy and find the edges. The 180 will give you some extra options for sure but is this for cosmetics or performance/practicality?

You can use 5.5inch GSXR wheels, just need to change the bearing sizes, new bearing centre spacer (steel tube), bit of machining of the caliper carrier and then spacers to get your chain alignment spot on. There's probably heaps of different ways to do it but gixxer wheels may be more readily available than bandit ones?

Looks good, one thing that would really annoy me on such a nice bike though is the state of the adjuster and nut on the rear needs to be clean and shiny on such a tidy bike.

Mainly cosmetics. I know some people wont like it and will say it wont turn in as well etc. But to me, i feel like the rear wheel needs to be wider to suit the style of the tail. The 180 cant be too bad considering its used on the majority of modern sports bikes. And im happy to play with different tyre profiles, shock setups etc to get it riding right.

Yeah im aware the gsxr wheel works too but im led to believe the bandit wheel still requires less work. There seems to be a few on ebay at the mo so shouldnt be too difficult to get my hands on one.

Yeah theres actually loads of scrappy bits about the bike that need sorting. The plan is to fully strip the bike down this winter.. have the frame, swingarm and engine fully stripped and repainted with all fresh nuts/bolt etc.

Oh my word!! Just read the whole thread, this is amazing your attention detail is ace!! You see a lot of projects that have been kind of thrown together if you like but not this. Awesome job man and great choice on the colour I love it!!

Was the s-rad front end easy enough to fit

how about turning the seat cowl upside down and a bit of fibre work, just adds a bit of colour.. excuse the photo work as i'm pants at it but you get the idea.

Thanks, appreciated :) Yeah front end was pretty straight forward. Grinding away at the headstock to retain the steering lock was probably the most hassle but with a good dremel bit it was relatively easy work. The rest was just a case of bolting it all together.

That's a good idea to use a cowl as a starting point for a belly pan kinda thing, but I unless the bike has a full fairing I believe all colour should stay on the upper half of a bike (with exception of the front mud guard). Personal preference of course. Never been a fan of belly pans anyway.

Ive considered this kinda thing...

Perhaps incorporated into the exhaust. I've measured up and done a few cad drawings but no further than that yet. Also depends if I'm gonna work around the stock exhaust or make a new front section to work with.. whatever you might call it!!
