Hi

K5 SV

I've had a constant "CHEC" code displayed for a few months. No other problems and running fine (ie side stand not down, kill switch not on).

Garage couldn't fix said it was ECU or feed into ECU (another part I can't remember) but to know what they needed the parts (or another SV to swop over to check).

Now running "odd" (nothing obvious but didn't feel right) but more obviously Speedo (digital) reading 0mph all the time when riding. That just happened. Switch on and off and not fixed. Left for a few hours and not fixed.

Any ideas what it is? Is it safe to ride? I guess a non-working speedo is illegal.

Thanks as always

i very much doubt that its the ECU unless your bike has been stolen and the wires cut at some point or some fool has been splicing into the main loom.

CHEC usually only comes on when there is a problem with the fuel injection system or the safety switches. more often than not its the kill switch.

its not illegal to ride without a speedo but its not clever.

i'm going to stick my neck out here and say you have a dodgy 'earth' somewhere. i dont like using the words 'earth' and 'ground' as there are none its a COMmon connection, these are usually black with a white tracer and you will find 'bus' blocks here and there where a bunch of COM will connect together, the metal link (bus bar) corrodes inside them and causes all sorts of problems.

HI Zombie, mysterious electrical gremlins are always a bit of a pain to sort out. The first thing to do is check the obvious places where water, dirt and corrosion can most easily take hold, as Bibio says joints and connectors are favourite. Get yourself some electrical contact cleaner, take each connection apart (be careful, most have little plastic tangs that you have to disengage) and give them a clean and inspect closely for any broken/corroded wires. There are several connections under the front of the tank that always seem to fail so that's a good lace to start.

I'm not sure why Bibio thinks you don't need a speedo. It is illegal to ride on the road without one that works, but it's not exactly easy for the police to prove unless you offer it up as an excuse for speeding.....
