View Full Version : My new project(s) Honda MB50 Mopeds

I wasn't going to bore you all with another "projects" thread, but there seems to be a little interest, so here goes.
I lost my mojo with the Honda CBX550 that I had, so put it up for sale for a lot less than I spent on it, but I was fed up of moving the damned thing around my shed & yard. A guy from Runcorn picked himself a complete bargain up for £400 & I now had money burning a hole in my pocket.
My plans were to buy a CBR600 steel frame for the same money that had the bodywork wrecked to turn into a track bike, but a mate of mine asked me if I would be interested in 4 1980's Honda MB50s. He reckoned that there are enough bits & pieces to make 1 nice bike, 1 so, so machine & maybe a bit of a rat bike, so popped round to have a look at what was available.
My big problem was that I had a few days to mull over my options. If I bought a track bike, it would be sat in the shed & maybe get used twice a year when I could afford to do a trackday, so, a waste of money really. I have a perfectly capable (& was rather cheap) SV650 that would do the same job :). So, I went round to have a look at what my mate had. I was met by this.

These are the new parts supplied too.

All of this for the princely sum of £350. I couldn't help myself & said yes & collected everything a few days later.
Once I'd unloaded everything, it sort of dawned on me what I'd done & I sat there thinking "What the hell have I done?", but, it'll keep me busy for a long time I think.
1st thing I had to do was clear out my shed, which took ages as someone had snuck in & set off a bomb. So we had a clear floor.

Then cleaned the bench off. All was now ready.
https://scontent-fra3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/12924328_10209124907179258_5685105707633342651_n.j pg?oh=1e6d9f67b9890dd09a7e0d1f01426da7&oe=57850F58

I've started mocking up the 1st machine with parts from the donor bikes. I only have logbooks for 2 of them & I like the reg number thats in 1 of the pictures above, so, I hope, this will turn out to be the "full resto" project. I want this one to end up "as new", if I can.
With the left over money I had, I've treated myself to an Ultrasonic cleaner. What a brilliant piece of kit this is! Here's a before & after of a carb I threw in to see how it faired.

Before.

So, the rebuild starts. Like I say, this is going to be a long road for me as I now only work part time, so I'll buy parts as & when I can afford them. 1st thing on the cards are nickel plating all of the bolts (may have a go at doing this myself with a kit off EBAY) & powder coating the frame. I've already started making a list of the parts I need & it looks a little long saying I have so many bits & pieces lying around, but, onwards & upwards :)

Snigger.

Nice one Col. I do enjoy your build threads. I'd love to do one myself but don't have the patience or skill sadly.

Looks like a good project you've got there, will be following this.

Can you tell me more about your ultrasonic cleaner please? Make/ model, how big it is, where you got it from, and what cleaning solution you're using?

Cool. Be nice to see a 50 done properly with skill for a change. :)

Building it in a shed instead of the kitchen is a bit posh though.

Been talking myself out of an ultrasonic cleaner for years. Tempted to push the button. Let's see a right manky brake caliper going in it!

Well, that has surprised me. I thought that my project write ups were boring.....Seems not :) Thank you for your interest in my shinanigins :).

This is the cleaner I bought. Good old Ebay :) I offered the guy £63 inc P & P and he accepted, so bit his hand off. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Liter-Stainless-Steel-Digital-Industry-Ultrasonic-Cleaner-Tank-Heater-w-Timer-/221956118459?hash=item33ad9d97bb:g:ZJ4AAOSw8-tWXVge
I had a nosey around the net & consensus of opinion was 1 part white vinegar, 1 part water & a dash of washing up liquid, seems to work very well on aluminium, haven't tried it on anything else yet. I set it running for the maximum 99 minutes & that was the result.

Getting there with the mock up. Spent most of the afternoon taking parts off 1 bike & putting them on the donor.

Started work on the engine & have found problems with 2 crankcase on separate engines. I'm a wee bit cheesed off, so will have to try another engine from one of the donor bikes.

Did a little more work last night. I love my Ultrasonic cleaner. Put the oil pump in it & it's come out like new :).
Indicator mounting brackets on the frame were in a right mess, bolts siezed & snapped, so have drilled them out & re fabricated them using the long nuts that I bought for my Nonfango rack bodge job & welded them to the frame. Also, the screws in the seat were rusted through & broken, so have made new. It's coming along slowly but surely :)

That ultrasonic witchcraft thingamy is amazing!
It is cool isn't it? I'm amazed at the results.

A few more bits done tonight. Starting to get a little aggravated, I now have not 2, but 3 engines with broken crankcases, which doesn't bode too well when the 4th is siezed solid. A friend of mine has some Belzoma, which is like a metal putty that sets like steel, so that is on it's way to me from oop North.

Engine 1
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/t31.0-8/12909665_10209254139409983_1459160055382293705_o.j pg

Engine 2
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/t31.0-8/12973253_10209254139569987_7647066671382896410_o.j pg

Engine 3
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/l/t1.0-9/12931238_10209254139769992_6764600484925934923_n.j pg?oh=b9513fa4481c45e2c5cf34c074bb1a56&oe=57821399

I started to strip one of the engines &, as usual, we have the usual "Bodge jobs". I loved this with the sprocket. The centre piece was also tack welded on :D
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtp1/t31.0-8/12973174_10209254141610038_2775710377272987269_o.j pg

Cylinder wouldn't come off, so had to resort to the hacksaw. Good job the normal hardened barrel bolts had been lost & some standard 6mm threaded bar was used instead, made life a little easier :p
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t31.0-8/10560320_10209254141970047_8819136164780822491_o.j pg

A quick degrease in the bath for the cylinder & head. I have tried my 1mm oversized piston & rings in this barrel & it's a perfect fit, so looks like it's had a rebore in it's past life. I will hone the cylinder to deglaze it before refitting.

My mate had one of these when we were 16, it was faster than my TSX and out other mate's DT.

He then crashed it and the exhaust snapped off at the engine, he rode it around like that, with no exhaust for months.

I want it to be a proper restoration. Everything I learned doing the ZXR should help me out. I've ordered a Nickel plating kit to replate all of the original nuts bolts & washers.
I was going to do a black, or red bike, but have decided everybody else does them in that colour, so am going to go with the original logbook, which is white.

So, onto the engine internals. Thought that I would strip the motor completely to see what horrors lay inside. To my amazement, it's spotless. The only real "problem" as such were gummed up clutch plates. Considering the motors have sat for nearly 20 years I'm absolutely amazed. I'm just waiting for new crank bearings & seals before I reassemble it (obviously after a clean & paint :))

I've been a little quiet on here of late, had to go back to working full time for a couple of weeks as my boss was away on holiday.
I've bought a nickel plating kit because the company I used last time charged me £60 to do about 3 dozen bolts on the CBX, so thought I'd have a bash myself.
I made up the chemicals & set up a battery charger as a power supply. My 1st attempt wasn't too good because I was too impatient, but the 2nd attempt has rewarded me with some nice shiny bits.

I've also received some Belzoma metal paste off a mate of mine & have started to repair the crankcases which were in a bit of a state.
I found a couple of old suspension bushes off my old CBX550 which were ideal for the job, so set to with the hacksaw to make them fit..... It was a bit nerve racking, but seems to have worked :). I then thoroughly cleaned both parts & bushes, then mixed the Belzoma & fitted the parts together. I measured another crankcase to make sure everything was in the right place & threaded a bolt through the bushes to keep it all square. I will show the results later when I've had a nosey this morning with everything dry.

Belzona didn't work :( so had to consider another option.
After finding 3 of my engines having broken crankcases, I thought I would take a look at the bike I had with the seized engine. Crankcases were in very good condition, so spent a couple of hours getting the crankcases separated from the cylinder. I have done it! piston is still stuck in the cylinder, but don't care now as I have a pair of useable crankcases. Project MB50 is back on

So today I have tried my hand at paint spraying for the 1st time. I'm quite pleased with the results. I am back at work tomorrow, so this should give the paint a little time to cure, then I'll move on to the engine rebuild.

Not a lot has happened for a few days. Bought a gasket set off Ebay & the bugger has supplied the wrong one, so am waiting for another to arrive.
While I was waiting, I thought that I would start to rebuild the gearbox & crankshaft, that's now done, with new bearings & seals.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y177/croozenooze/2016-04-23%2017.08.30_zpsrk5zkzh6.jpg (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/croozenooze/media/2016-04-23%2017.08.30_zpsrk5zkzh6.jpg.html)
So that's where we're up to at the moment. As soon as I receive the proper gasket kit, work will recommence :)

How many bits are left on the bench after rebuilding the gearbox? If it was me there would be several... And if it ran at all after me fiddling with it the bike would probably go backwards.

Keep the pics coming Col :)

It didn't help that I had 2 gearboxes in pieces on the bench & Honda's workshop manual is crap when it comes to diagrams lol

Another gasket set arrived & the rebuild continues. I have finished the bottom end & fitted the clutch after checking plate thickness etc. I haven't tried the gearbox to see if the gears work as I got carried away last night & ended up working in the shed till late. I will give it a try later to see if I've put it together correctly.
Just noticed that I have a little run in the paint on the crankcase cover. I think it will have to stay there now, which will bug me with my OCD lol.

You're probably better off on the allotment. Out in the fresh air and sunshine.

Sir Trev

Hang on, allotment? Is this an opportunity for a Show Us Your Veg thread?? If we ever get any sun I'll wander down and snap the seedling parsnips - they're only just showing mind...

We are a case of all the gear & no idea. I dig bits over & stick things in the ground & hope that they grow :p

Unfortunately my project has had to come to an end. We need another car, so I have had to put the peds up for sale. They are getting collected on Sunday. :(

If this blokes work is anything to go by, he'll make a nice job of them. This is one of the problems of going part time, we have to sell to buy & a car is more important than some rusty parts in a shed
