View Full Version : Camping with a guitar
So I'm thinking of going to a few bluegrass festivals on my bike this year (SV650S, faired) which means I also have to lug a guitar around on my back in a gig bag, which cuts down on what I can carry. I've got a Givi v46 backbox which can carry some stuff, but obviously i need to figure out how to carry a tent.
Any suggestions on how to do this (taking into account the guitar!) or what kind of tent to use will be appreciated.
I don't need to worry about cooking as I can survive on festival food, and don't have to worry about clothes as I can use the Sir Ranulph Fiennes technique of turning pants inside out on a strict rota etc - So i guess it's just tent and sleeping bag.
Get a small tent and bungee it to the topbox?

How far are you travelling with the guitar? My back gets sore with just a rucksack very quickly and that's on a naked bike.

Isn't that how everyone wears pants anyway?

Get someone else to take a guitar or borrow one? It's a festival - there'll be loads of them.
No clothes? You're going to seriously stink.
Get a 2 person tent you can sit up in.(you never know...) Cheaper the better at a festival. And take a thicker sleeping bag than you think - if you are cold it's truly horrible. And get a sleeping mat - the ground is surprisingly cold!!
Get a tankbag. Pack light so. all you need is a tank bag for smalls N t-shirt.
Soft shoes and socks bin liners rubber bands so you can tie up stuff
Go to the supermarket and get a tent it's not worth the money to get a good one.

Or go the other way, and get a smaller guitar. I've got one of these in the cupboard that doesn't get as much use it deserves http://www.shapelywood.com/guitars/skinny/

I've used a IBANEZ MIKRO ELECTRIC .
That's ideal but the amp might be a challenge.

What do you mean a gig bag?
Is the back box on the back or is it over the pillion seat?
I've had a lot of luck with vango tents, omega 250... brilliant sized porch for bike kit and goes on the bike well.
Pack the bike, not you. I'd stick some throw-over panniers on, then the tent, then the guitar over the top of all that. You could actually get the tent inside one of the panniers easy enough.
I'm imagining bluegrass festivals aren't quite as likely to end up with some gap-year tosspiece off their tits on heroin and red bull running over your tent so you're better having a comfy night than a cheap festival tent?

Just admit you want to take too much stuff and get a car....
