View Full Version : Am I been stupid
I'm stuck as what to do, I've started cycling to work now to shift some chunk and the bikes sat under a cover on charge, I think in a month I've rode 6 miles my car is sat on drive doing nothing if we go out as a family we take the family car so now I have 2 toys say doing nothing and winter around the corner. My problem is I'm desperate to buy another camper van as and I'm thinking do I sell up the bike and car get a camper and next year get another bike or buy cheap hack to potter
Anyone else had a problem like this
yes & yes
Get what you want with what you dont need and yes the n+1 rules seems to be applicable in many other situations ;)
A campervan sounds awesome.. would love to get one someday and travel around europe!
Yes, the last two years I've put 12000 miles on the pushbike and 500 on the motorbike, mine's a 17 year old SV that owes me nothing so can't get rid of it. Campervan sounds great....
Listed the car an hour ago and it's sold already fella coming to collect Friday, just leaves me now to decide on the bike,

If it doesn't owe anything keep it, maybe you'll use it in the winter to commute.
I'm keeping mine

I am off my bike at the moment due to poor health and as such my precious Sylvie is in storage where she has been for most of this year. The logical part of me says that it is costing me money to have her sat doing nothing. But given that she is no longer taxed or insured, these losses are now at a minimum.
Will I sell her? F*^% that! They will have to prise her keys from my cold dead hands before I let her go! It is the dream of riding her again that is keeping me going during the hard bits.
Sometimes, the logical answer is not always the best answer.
A few years ago we had one family car and my CBR600 which I really loved. I needed to get a car for work etc so had to sell my baby..... Which was gutting. However I got my car and life was good, fast forward 3 years and I got my lovely SV which I'm over the moon with. Things will come and go but you can always save up for another one in the future. Life is too short I'm afraid

Cardio is the worst way of losing weight, ipso facto.
Eat less, deduct a bit of food (not a meal) until you start losing about 2lb a week, that's healthy and sustainable.
Keep the car and bike, use both in the winter, just rinse 'em down from time to time, they're not gonna turn into rusty rot boxes.

Not bothering with that, the iink name made me whince enough at it is.

So you shouldn't bother trying to get fitter and just focus completely on diet to lose weight? Hmm..... you can still be overweight and fit, just like you can be slim and incredibly unfit. The slim and unfit person isn't healthier as far as I'm concerned.
You've no idea what you're talking about :) Fitness isn't dictated by how well conditioned your cardiovascular system is. Someone can run further than me, so what? They can be 35kg heavier than me and will have blood work that'd make you whince.

that will NEVER happen. there is too much of a huge industry surrounding slimming. i do know that they are giving trial treatment to patients with 'insert name' (i cant remember the exact illness) and its looking promising.
however, you can kickstart these microbes by eating selected foods.
this is way off topic :D

I think you need to take a more holistic view of fitness rather than separating cv fitness with blood work. Fitness isn't just about eating healthy otherwise the NHS wouldn't advise people to exercise. To suggest to someone that they should sack off exercise in favour of a healthy diet RATHER than suggesting they try both is completely ridiculous and I suggest it is you that has no idea what you're talking about.
haha "the NHS" that'd be like suggesting a GP would be best placed to advise you on how to lower your body fat.
Listen, keep on keeping on. You can think what you like :) You're taking an armchair pundit opinion whereas I am talking a real world, years of experience, catalogue of success and an entire series of proven, large case study research.

You're actually better eating LOADS more to trick your metabolism in to burning through more fat. That way it will stop storing so much. Think burgers for breakfast etc.

i think we should start another thread in Idle Banter as this one is getting waaaayyyy off track.

Give me the evidence so I can make an informed decision then. Rather than educate you're hell bent on being insulting. How lovely.
Ugh.
Metabolism is adaptive, it's been shown time and time again that being capable of running 2 miles, 20 miles or 250 miles at any point in your life will provide absolutely no benefit in terms of extending your life expectancy. HOWEVER, being able to perform extended periods of intensive cardio exercise tends (and I mean TENDS) to go hand in hand with someone being "in shape" (i.e. below a certain body fat percentile).
Being able to run, cycle, swim...none of these things provide a SMIDGEN of the health benefits of having low subcutaneous fat levels AND EVEN MORE SO visceral fat levels. Both are related to free radicals, heart disease, type 2 diabetes...you know, fat lazy gob****e diseases.
It makes sense for the NHS and other lazy, middle of the road "experts" to advise that you exercise, exercise helps (initially) to lose fat as your body will enter a state of ketosis once you do enough cardio at any given moment, this causes body fat levels to drop, lessening your chances of heart disease, diabetes and other fat lazy ******* diseases.
Seeing a pattern yet? No? Ok, let me go on...
What they fail to mention (chronically) is that metabolism and your cardiovascular system is incredibly adaptive. Take Eddie Izzard for example, he performed "the impossible" by running 5 marathons (maybe more, I've forgotten) in the same amount of days. Do some research, see how much training he put in for these...actually don't bother, I'll tell you right now: little to none. He noted how the marathons got progressively easier per day, because, guess what, the CV system along with matabolism is adaptive. He was no "fitter" at the end of any of these than he was before, he shed maybe 15lb at most, the majority of which was water weight.
Why do I mention both CV and metabolism is adaptive? Because they go hand in hand. You can run on a treadmill for the first time in twenty years and you'll maybe manage 10 minutes, you'll burn out and go home...fair enough, your CV system is whack. The next time you go, you'll run a little longer or a little further...but, unfortunately, you'll burn less calories, this trend will continue for all eternity until your body hits its set state in which you'll be able to run a certain distance without nearly killing yourself, your genetic wall if you will, you'll always, always burn the same amount of calories (give or take a few dependent on stress and rest levels) as your body has become incredibly adept as pumping oxygen around your body, your resting heart rate will lower and you'll have a greater sense of well being.
OR, you could drop 10-15% below your TDEE and you'll lose 2lb a week. This'll continue for (usually) 12 weeks at which point you'll stall with weight loss. Stick with it and it'll pick up again...then you'll stall again. Your TDEE has dropped so you experiment with total daily caloric intake and find the sweet spot to drop 2lb a week again. You'll get to approximately 12-15% body fat and look lean, mean and feel about a MILLION times better than you did before...simply because you've binned off lots and lots of cancer, diabetes and heart disease inducing body fat.
Now, if you can't take the above for what it is. More fool you, you can run until your knees seize up and you'll be nowhere near as "fit" as someone who's carrying less bodyfat than you.
Oh and weight lifting will always provide a serious amount of benefit over cardio, for all eternity.
This ain't the 80s anymore buddy. Get with it.
Again, you have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about. You've simply read something and taken it completely out of context. Go away you pesky little zit.

This is the first thread I've read in many many months on the Org that has degenerated into such a 'nasty' thread & way off topic.
If I'd had the Mod stick I would have waved it a long time ago, the Org is a friendly & helpful site, this sort of thread belongs on the VFR owners site.
