Cafe racers and scramblers seem to be the go just lately and manufacturers are 'scrambling' to get on the bandwagon. From my experience knobbly tyres on the road are not a good idea, I had a 250 Honda Trail bike (more years ago than I care to remember now) with trials tyres (tread blocks are spaced closer than scrambles tyres) - used to weave a bit on corners, and brown underpants time on wet tarmac.

Same sort of thing here, not something that I would wish to repeat. Once you have experience of a modern quality road tyre (PR'4 in my case) then "trials tyres" would feel and probably would be bloody dangerous.

Yebbut one of them is a cafe racer - ooh-la-la - very pretty. The paint job is a bit classic Yamaha-like to me, but with different more Suzuki like colours (Rizla?) it would be even nicer IMHO.

For that sort of look you want to go back an era with the colours. Skoal Bandit perhaps, or Faberge. You're right abut that yellow being a bit too Yamaha.

It isn't just the colour yorkie-chris, it is the colour and the black stripe which, if it had a few breaks in it would be the classic Yamaha race colours.

This. A bit too close to the Yamaha Speed Block pattern.

Whereas it would look better (in my eyes) as...

I'm with YC here at least on the scrambler Suzuki's off road colours were and still are yellow.
IIRC the yellow Yamaha Speedblocks design was Yamaha USA.
Saying that no one really remembers half of the manufacturer colours. KTM used to be white and red... Realises I'm showing my age and saunters off.

UK RD250 & 350's had the speedblocks didn't they?

I dont think so I'm pretty sure that the British bikes were all a simple curved design. This is the USA version for King Kenny (http://www.rd350lc.net/page1EL-85.htm) There are plenty of customs out there now mind you...

Yep, I'll have that scrambler, please. Just fit dual purpose road biased tyres and a bash plate. It's time Suzuki caught up with the rest of the market - the new SV650 engine is, IMHO, the best mid sized engine around. It's under utilised at present and could surely form the heart of a number of derivatives, including a scrambler. For pure fun, this package would leave other manufacturers standing. When can I buy one, Suzuki?

I think the striking looks of these two bikes are in a good part due to spoked wheels, I really like the look of spoked wheels on bikes and cars (even though they a pain to keep clean) as long as they are tubeless.
Wouldn't like to take a 400lb + bike off tarmac if seat was any higher than 30" though (which is probably why GS1200's stay firmly on hard and fairly smooth surfaces because weighing in at 600lbs + with a high seat it would be a brave / foolish man that went onto anything soft, loose or uneven).
I think the new SV engine is an absolute gem, but I never rode an earlier model than the AL7 (It was the lovely unique sound that made me notice the SV650 / Gladius first, before I knew much about it).

My thoughts exactly.

I see Suzuki are offering a 'scrambler' version of the SV650 in France. Looks like a token effort - half a job - and misses an opportunity to create a really exciting machine around such a great engine. If the French project is about testing the market, perhaps Suzuki will go away and rethink before bringing out a more exciting machine in the UK. We can only hope!
