View Full Version : Curvy cut out - now dead

Hi org

Been a long time :(

Was on my way to breakfast on Sunday morning doing 60 ish when the bike cut out. As if I had flicked the kill switch

Pulled the clutch in and was coasting trying the electric start nothing tried letting out the clutch to bump it. Back wheel locked so clutch back in and coasted to safety.

Turned the bike off back on flicked the kill switch a few times clutch in push button starter goes as normal but no spark.

Everything seems to work as normal I just don't get a spark. After half an hour the battery died so bike went home in a van and I didn't get breakfast :(

As said all seems to be ok electrical and fuel choke doesn't seem to be sticking. Just never fires.

I haven't started taking her apart yet so haven't tested anything. But it seems I've lost both coils at the same time is this likely???

I don't think it's the plugs as they are rather new

Anyone have any ideas or best place to start looking

Right I haven't checked or taken any of the bike apart yet.

But I stuck it on charge when I got back on Sunday. Just tried it and started first push of the button and was running perfectly.

Could it have anything to do with the bike being warm ? I had only done 11miles when it cut out.

The battery is new only fitted in June and I had plenty of charge left when it cut out. Battery only died because I spent an hour trying to start it.

Check the normal things that stop it sparkling

Sidestand switch

Clutch switch

Check the loom under the seat to make sure it hadn't chaffed through on the subframe

I'd also check the kill switch, I had a cx500 where one went, when I disconnected it, my bike started as normal

With side stand, clutch and kill switch I wouldn't get the starter motor going would I ?

When mine had similar intermittent symptoms, it was the wiring loom as it passed under the tank hinge.

Pretty quick and easy to check.

Pull and check ALL fuses and check for corrosion and push them back in securely.I clean my fuses holders and all electrical contacts with Servisol type switch cleaners and once evaporated apply some ACF50,

In a very quiet place with the ignition on move the bars and bike a little and listen for,"Arcing/Shorting".

Also common on all older motorcycles are the large connector block pins and sockets corroding.Mine had some corrosion at the large Connector block under the tank near the head-stock.I think it's Yellow on mine or Green,can't remember.Also a more difficult one to get to but has caused problems on older Motorcycles is the one that pushes into the Ignition barrel.Any one of the pins/connections that fail on these can cause no end of problems.

There are several weak points on the curvy wiring loom to check.One is around the headstock where the wiring moves with bar movement causing chafe.Another is under the seat where the bolts that hold the rider seat protrude through their captive nuts and rub on the loom.Another is under the pillion seat/tail unit where the loom does a couple of sharp turns and can break a wire.
You dont have an alarm/immobiliser hopefully?

It is unlikely that you have lost both coils, but the pulse generator pickup is what tells the ignition control unit to fire them. You can measure its impedance with your ohmmeter (around 180 ohms, I think), although this doesn't necessarily indicate a good unit.

As other's have suggested, look for chafed wiring/bad connections first. Look for 12V on the orange/white wire at the ignitor and also about 6V on the orange/red at the ignitor, it won't run (spark) without both of these.

Unless you can track down the intermittent fault I'm certain it will come back to bite you in the A** :smt100

turn the bars side to side when the bike is running then after that grab and pull/shake the wires going into the frame at the headstock.

Does the curvy have the same weak point in the loom connector for the ignition? My pointy recently died because the connector block burned out... again!
