The story so far:

Motorcycle manufacturers stop fitting rear mudguards and fit a spindly number plate/stop light device that everyone tends to think is ugly.

We remove spindly thingy and fit a tail tidy but because we don't have a mudguard and we've removed the spindly thing we have to fit a hugger to protect the shock and reduce spray.

This doesn't work too well so they now produce a spray guard. Good grief!

If this carries on I'll be shouting at the tv next...

The "snowploughs" they fit as standard do sweet feck all for protecting the shock and subframe.... Doubled down with the fact that most are eyesores are you genuinely surprised that the majority replace them with huggers and tail tidies??

I feel sorry for the R&D teams who design rear ends of motorbikes. All that time (10mins?) for something that pretty much every owner with good eyesight is going to chop off and replace with a superior aftermarket offering.

For some reason, Yamaha did this with the MT range but still offer tail tidies, huggers and bellypans at build time, could it be to make more £?

There's a simple answer if you want proper mudguards, buy a Royal Enfield Classic.

And twin shocks are out of the line of fire of the crap coming off the rear wheel ;)

IIRC it's some sort of legislation or rule that says the rear wheel can't be the most rearward part. Which is why the mudguard or splash guard protrudes beyond the rear wheel.

& you can thank the EU for all the orange reflectors on the side of the bike too
