OMO...help me navigate the action cam quagmire please!

Son wants an action cam for Crimbo...

The go-pro hero5 black is too much at 399 or whatever.

Halfords are flogging off the hero session at 139 and the hero5 session at 249.

Veho muvi k2 oo6 is about 124.99 whilst the 007 is 139.99

They all seem much of a muchness to my untrained eye. I understand that the muvi 007 has an upgraded chipset and I would be happy to get that...but then surely I should go for the hero sessions from Halfords?

What does one cam do that the other doesn't?

What the boy would like to do is a bit of action cam whilst he's on his bike, and also use it occasionally as a webcam on a tripod etc. He likes his youtube. Trouble is once you start looking around it's like opening a can of worms!:smt027

drop a sneeky and ask him which one he thinks he would like or get one of his mates to do it and report back to you.

1st one - my old Garmin Virbe, bear in mind youtube compression kills most uploads

2nd Garmin again in France from my pushbike, so a bit bumpy

My current SJcam 4000, TBH I can't see much difference and its only £58, its lighter and the mount is a bit more rigid than the Virb

Blimey! At 58 quid the kids could have one each! Cant see anything wrong with any of those. we're seeking functionality rather than perfection.

Yep. Just make sure it's a genuine sjcam there's a few fakes out there. Which is kinda strange.

Uses the same mount as a gopro so easy to find mounts and other stufg

I'll find the eBay item and post it up

When I did my research I decided to buy UK stock.

If you Google fake Sjcam it's fairly easy to spot a fake from a real one.

At least with UK stock you can return it easily

Fair point. I'll have a good look. Thank you Mr M.

I like the Drift Stealth 2 because it's small and in a long narrow format so for helmet cams it doesn't stick a mile out from your head. Easily found for £99.

Not such an issue for handlebar mount.

Here you go, this is the seller I got my SJcam from, its gone up in price, but that'll be down to Brexit

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-SJCAM-SJ4000-WIFI-12MP-HD-1080P-Sports-DV-Action-Waterproof-Camera-CAM-/121910365114?hash=item1c626c8bba:g:nlMAAOSwaEhZNh~ D

The pack includes lots of mounts, and 2 batteries.

There's other packages with the same camera. There's an app

For £66 its not bad value & if it gets trashed its not the end of the world like a GoPro. It looks similar to the GoPro

I like the GoPro Hero Session for its size, but I've read its prone to freezing, battery get hot etc etc

Waiting for the Hero Session 5

I have used tomtop a couple of time and they were good.

Until my last delivery, ordered end July and still not here. Their tracking says shipped to UK out of Singapore. Parcelforce say still out there all they have done is raise the shipping paper work, but it has not arrived at their hub. Many months arguing with them they will not accept it has never arrived in the UK, "We shipped it 8th August". So now in the process of a paypal dispute in an attempt to get my money back.

As for action cams, I got a cheap 4k, great it works when you add the memory card. Hmmm nowhere to fit on the bike. So buy a mount that fits in the stem and a flat plate on which to stick the camera. Hmmm I need more recording time so buy a new housing with charge facility (already got USB charging the bike for phone etc). Then what happens if I aint on the bike so spare battery.

Owning an action cam suddenly cost twice what I payed for it just to make it useful.

Edit, just got an email from paypal, £152 refunded. Pity. but I wont be using Tomtop again

Glad you got your money back - that's always nice to hear.

In the end I ordered the one from fleabay and it has apparently been dispatched from Portsmouth...I hope it manages to get past Haldane Hill. I guess sometimes it's only when you get these things in your hand that you realise what else you're going to need for your own ergonmics etc. I've also ordered the Micro SDs and a stylish SD card holder. Fingers crossed for Crimbo. Now looking at options for upgrading from 1x Xbox one to 2x Xboxones...it never ends!
