Oh mighty org:

I am looking for a bit of kit that logs a vehicle's position & speed (a gps tracker you say?), but I am also looking for it to be able to log whether an auxiliary bit of kit is on or off - in this occasion warning lights.

Google hasn't turned up anything and I figure it's a fairly niche line anyway, so was hoping someone here may have some insight.

I'm not particularly willing to go in to the back story on this so will just leave it as there are some parties complaining that our vehicles are running about with warning lights on with no good cause.

We have been authorised by the relevant authorities to do what we do, we're simply now looking to protect ourselves by being able to say that our vehicles were:

a) Not in the area
b) In the area but no warning equipment active
c) In the area and warning equipment was active

I would assume it just needs to be a logger that can detect whether circuit xyz was live or not - but I don't seem to be turning up many results. If anyone has some wisdom, I would appreciate your guide.

A simple OBD logger would record the fault with a time stamp, then you could just compare that with a normal vehicle tracker

Ah, when I say warning light I mean roof bar lights kinda thing. Need to be able to log whether they're on or not. They're controlled by a separate control unit etc, so I'm struggling!

Oh I see. Umm wire the tracker to activate when the roof light circuit is on? Not sure if trackers have control inputs but if not you could just power the tracker from the same circuit

As the name implies, think – in, when you think about inputs. An input wire is used to detect a change of state (on/off) for an external component. For example, when the no seatbelt light of a car goes on, connecting an input wire to the light would let you know the seatbelt was not being used. Or, if a PTO was turned on, or off – you would know what is going on.

Is there an indicator light on the vehicle dashboard when roof lights are on ? If so mount a GPS dashcam so that its area includes dash. Or connect an LED that shows when roof lights are on and place it in view of dashcam.
