Hi
I just bought a gen1 sv that's had been sitting for 6 months.....starts fine, idles ok....but fluffy and back fires when trying to rev..also back fires a bit of petrol out of the rear carb with the air box off....I have cleaned the carbs and checked the plugs...and checked for air leeks, all seem ok.....what else could it be?

thanks

New plugs, new tank full of fuel, remove and clean the choke plungers, lube the choke plunger cables and the throttle cables and linkage, synchronise the carbs with a vacuum gauge, clean/replace the air filter.

Then let us know how it runs.

Hi
I have done all the above.......does a dodgy regulator make a bike run rough??

Worth checking the carb rubbers for cracks too.

It could be old plug caps and HT leads, that can cause rough running as soon as there is any load on the spark.
Also crud in the carbs, it might be sucking gunk up and blocking a jet as soon as the fuel starts to move a bit quicker.

Hi

Mine is in exactly this condition at the moment. When I ran it up a few weeks ago just to keep it from gumming up over winter it wasn't running properly at all, like you say it doesn't rev properly. Did a bit of measuring and the RR has definitely died on mine. Check the voltages.
Mine is not getting above 13.5V at any condition and barely 13V lights on.
Fortunately I have a MOSFET one sitting waiting to be fitted, it was a case of when I get round to it, now my hand has been forced.

Mosfet ones are better than OEM, I can't remember what MOSFET is,

Here's a link. But check how many plug connections your RR has, some of the last curvies have 2, some have one.

Mine had two, a late 2002 curvy

basically the type of semi-conductors used in the RR. They have lower volt drop across them and produce less heat etc, better reliability and more stable voltage regulation typically. A lot of bikes use them now, they "usually" have 2 sockets on them, one with 3 wires for the alternator supply, one with normally 2 wires for + and - output (may possibly have a third but usually just 2).
I got mine used off ebay, there's no hard and fast guide for which bike model to go for. The MOSFET ones usually have a code on them which will be FH010 or FH012 or FH020 etc. The higher numbers usually mean greater current capacity I think, or later versions.
You'll usually need to alter the wiring a bit on your bike to suit, normal 6.3mm spade connectors will go straight on the contacts as long as you know which is which, or you can get the correct sumitomo (?) sockets.
Try a search for Shindengen on the net for info, Eastern Beaver can be a useful source of info and connectors if you want to go that route (I haven't).

If you do change the RR, make sure you carefully inspect related wiring, and remove the extra unnecessary connector, the Electrex RR comes with full instructions for this.

Right had another look today....and its only running on the front cylinder......have got a spark on the rear plug,..also plug is not wet when taken out...so it must be a fueling issue on the rear carb.....looks like I will have to take them out and clean again!! :-)
